Hi

I have listened to progressive rock for two-three years now, and I feel that I have grasped a good part of the genre. My album collection contains albums of Yes, King Crimson, ELP, VDGG, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Camel, Gentle Giant, Caravan, Hatfield and the North, Happy the Man, Marillion, Mike Oldfield, Eloy, Grobschnitt, Mr. Bungle, Ozric Tentacles, Banco del Sutuo Moccorso, Le Orme, PFM, Focus, Flower Kings, Ayreon, Pain of Salvation, Dream Theater, Opeth and Änglagard, to name some.

I'm currently in a situation with little spare time, so I can't explore all the bands that I would like to right now. On the other hand, I would like som new music to listen to, in addition to what I already got. I'm looking for music that can relate to one of the following descriptions:
  • A distinct "English" feel (if you know what I mean). I find it on Genesis' "Selling England...", England's "Garden shed" and the two albums by Cressida.
  • Canterbury; I want to get into Gong and Soft Machine. I love Caravan's "In the Land of Grey..." and "For Girls Who..." and the two first albums by Hatfield and the North.
  • Some more folk-prog. Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" and Traffic's "The Low Spark.." are among my favorites in this sub-genre.
  • Psycadelic, a little humorous, like "Piper at the Gates of Dawn".
  • Something like Grobschnitt's "Rockpommel's Land".
  • Italian, not famous prog, like Maxophone and Museo Rosenbach.
  • Something with both soothing, agressive and complex flute and/or saxophone work, like that found on many VDGG-albums.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Gong-Camembert Electrique and/or Angel's Egg
Soft Machine-Volumes 1/2 on one cd, Third, or the Out-Bloody Rageous anthology

Italian-try Mauro Pagani's solo album with Demetrio Stratos

Prog-folk-Principal Edwards Magic Theater (I just got Round One and it is excellent, very British too)

If you haven't heard Faust you should listen to their first to albums.

Try some National Health-s/t or Of Queues and Cures and Egg-Polite Force

All good stuff, I'm sure there's more, but this is all I can think of at the moment.

Sounds like you've made a good start already. My advice would be something like this:

1) Check out the reviews here, then follow your instinct. The best albums are probably the ones that generate the most diverse opinions!

2) If you like a certain group, follow the individual members of that group on to their solo projects and/or other groups. This is how I discovered loads of interesting artists. For example I discovered Happy The Man by tracing back Kit Watkins when he joined Camel in 1978. You can use www.allmusic.com as a good reference guide.

That's it. Happy hunting!

"English" feel: try Spring and early Barclay James Harvest
Canterbury: I would suggest Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom
Prog-Folk: Strawbs (early albums especially), Jan Dukes de Grey,
Fuchsia, Mellow Candle.
Italian: Balletto di Bronzo, Locada delle fate, Osanna (try Palepoli, it
has King Crimson-VDGG influences)
To end with, I also recommend the German-based (but English) band
Nektar (A tab in the ocean and Remember the future)
