Topic: Recommend me some good prog... Posted: December 15 2005 at 18:06 |
I've been listening to the same things for over 3 months....I need new music !!
I just haven't been able to find something that really gets to me. I know that prog is something that most of the times takes time to grown on you, but still, most stuff I've tried, I'v been like : M'eh I'm into prog rock and prog metal. I guess a m a noob since I have only been listening to prog for a couple of months. I'm over the DT phase at least My favorite bands are Spock's Beard, Pain of Salvation, The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Rush, and Neal Morse (solo). If any of you knows a band that is highly melodic, has good lyrics/concepts, has excellent musicianship (I play bass...), and that is not stereotypically prog, please tell me I've tried some prog metal bands like Zero Hour, Threshold and some others I can't even remember, but they all are very boring since they kinda follow prog metal stereotypyes.. Neal Morse has mentioned Gentle Giant a lot as an influence and I was wondering what was a good starting point to get into GG...I've heard that they are amazing, so hopefully I'll like em. Thanks for the help! |

GG are nothing like you have described as your interest, I recomend King Crimson if you like Metal. Go for their first album and work your way up slowly.

Gentle Giant is a great band! You should really check'em out Start with In a Glass House, then get Octopus or Free Hand. If you don't like em, get Genesis - Foxtrot, King Crimson - In The Court of The Crimson King or Yes - Close To The Edge Edited by Bj-1 |

Definitely look into GG.. Bj makes good recommendations. If you fancy
melodic prog with great lyrics and incredible musicmanship you cant go
wrong with Genesis!

Mekong Delta.
They have a diverse catalogue and just released a nice low price compilation. I would say buy all their cds but you may want to test the waters first. The best thing about them is they do not sound like Rush or Dream Theatre, They are truly unique. Most progressive metal bands are insipid. |

Devin Townsend, huh? I've only heard him on The Human Equation by
Ayreon. How is Townsend's solo stuff? What exactly is "earth metal"?
And I agree with Bj-1 about Genesis and Yes. Those are both good albums. And you can't really go wrong with Genesis (IMO, of course). But they're totally not metal. I've never heard much Gentle Giant, but what I have heard is pretty... quirky. |

How dare you knock Threshold! They are the only prog-metal band we've got so leave them alone! They rock! Try some Tool, Rick Wakeman (solo stuff), obviously Floyd, The Mars Volta, Pagan's Mind, Kamelot, Ring of Fire, DragonForce (one of the UK's best Prog-Power metal bands, so don't knock 'em lol) Devin Townsend, Planet X, Symphony X, Primus (primaily 'Sailing the Sea of Cheese'), Radiohead (British band don't knock lol), Sikth (british band don't knock lol), Biomechanical (british band don't knock lol), Circus Maximus plus any Yngwie, Via and Satch There they should fit your critieria, give them alisten and let me know what you thnik. |

Hello. If you want melodic, lyrically good, excellent musicianship, not stereotypical prog band try Caravan. It's Cantebury Scene band. But it is not metal Try:
