I got Close to the Edge and Yessongs at the same time, and I found
those two to be a good starting point. After that, go for The Yes Album
and Fragile, then Relayer.

To appreciate ALL of the Yes albums to their full extent, start with the very first album - Yes. Then go chronologically foward till you get to Drama. That way you can appreciate the growth of Yes, its amazing! If you hear Yes or Time and a Word after hearing Close To The Edge or Fragile, they definately wont hit you as hard.
Go from their earliest - Yes, and get every album chronologically till you get to Drama.

My first Yes albums were Fragile and Relayer. I love them. It was a good place for me to start.

For a Yes newbie, I'd start with The Yes Album.
Then get Fragile & Close To The Edge. (CTTE is their BEST effort IMO).
Lots to choose from after that.

After digesting those goodies, add the following to your collection:
Drama Tormato Magnification The Ladder

I WOULD START WITH CLOSE TO THE EDGE, THEN FRAGILE, THEN THE YES ALBUM AS THEY ARE THE MOST ACCESSIBLE. THEN TRY RELAYER AND TALES. I WOULD,NT CHOOSE KEYSTUDIO AS I CONSIDER IT THE WEAKEST ALBUM BY THE CLASSIC LINE-UP!

I would say...
The Yes Album is their most accessible "classic" effort, with a poppy anthemic sound. Therefore, it's a good starting point for Yes.
Fragile is their "quintessential" classic effort, with a diverse range of band showcases. Therefore, it's a good starting point for Yes.
Close To The Edge is their "greatest" classic effort, the epic they were born to make, if you will. Therefore, it's a good starting... crud.
I guess it really depends on what sound you like best. Anthemic, shiny Yes, eccentric, moody Yes, or sprawling, phantasmic Yes. I started with Fragile, and I might have liked, say, The Yes Album better, so you're gonna have to pick one.
Mmm, now I'm in the mood for Yes...

Fragile was my first choice, and it has done me well.
