 Topic: Best drummer?

I chose these three as they are widely considered to be 3 of the greatest drummers ever.
I know I must have missed out many other very good drummers but these 3 are the elite.

1. its hard to name a prog metal band he hasnt had involvment with.
2. DT almost singlehandedly brouht back prog in the 90's
3.There is a reason Modern Drumer named him drummer of the year last year.
4. Watch live in tokyo and tell me he isnt legendary.

Sorry for being nitpicky, but you mean "3 of the greatest rock drummers" ever, don't you ? And you could have thrown Ian Paice and Ginger Baker in there, so as to give this one a more complete feeling.
Something inside of me is literarly forcing me to vote for Peart, but since I hate being forced to do anything, I'll vote for Bonham instead.

Some people here will skin you for this. And I don't agree with this, either.

He's damn solid and a powerhouse, but he isn't legendary, people like Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Billy Cobham, Peart and Bonham are. |

He's damn solid and a powerhouse, but he isn't legendary, people like Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Billy Cobham, Peart and Bonham are.
And i agree that they are all legends in their own right, but i feel that after 20 years, hes earned the right to be concidered legendary.

DT's a seminal prog metal band, sure, but they're hardly the only important prog metal act and even less so the only important 90s' prog rock act. Sure, they're quite popular, but it's not really about that, prog will only die when it has nothing more to say, not when practically no one listens to it. It never really died, even in the 80s', it just went off the map, but kept putting out great stuff, not only neo-prog. So no, DT has probably gained prog lots of new fans (myself included), but, on the whole, they're a very controversial band, with lots of harsh critics among fans of other 90s' prog bands and members of these bands themselves.
Portnoy definitely deserves more recognition for his work, but there are hundreds of drummers who do... check this site out, if you don't know it already:

From me it is a hard choice,
John Bonham did do that long
solo on “Moby Dick” however
I think Neil Pert outshines John
Bonham overall.

There are so many drummers who can out play portnoy its not even funny.
I have alot of respect for the work he did with dream theater - but so
many people think he's some kind of "technical god" just because he
plays a bunch of odd time signatures. I can name at least 20 drummers
who could play circles around him off the top of my head.

Well, I voted Neil because I think he truly is the best rock drummer around. However, you forgot some greats like Phil Collins (second best drummer), Bill Bruford, Portnoy, Pip Pyle and so on. Not surprisingly, I would not include Keith Moon or John Bonham as among the great drummers. I think their reputation is overblown.

Out of those 3 pretty easy decision. Although Zeppelin was always my favorite band, I pick the legendary Neil Peart. My second favorite drummer is actually Stuart Copeland.

I was expecting this one from you...indeed he's an excellent drummer, at the top on "You". Among french ones, Christian Vander is a killer on a technical level.

Yep, Moon was unique, and lots of fun to watch, but somewhat technically sloppy, I think (Bruford -- my fave -- reputedly said of Moon: "He just hits things"). So, of those listed, Peart, easily (not that Bonham wasn't a powerhouse).
Yes, Stewart (sp) Copeland was -- I presume still is -- very good. Have you seen the Police - Synchronicity Tour DVD? I recently bought it, and it's quite good. Copeland is great & very fast on it. An under-appreciated rock drummer, for sure!
