 Topic: Only 3 Floyd albums worth a damn....

...at least when it comes to progressive rock.
First off, I know that this kind of a statement will tick off plenty of forum members, and I wouldn't expect otherwise. Pink Floyd are ridiculously popular, within the prog rock realm and with fans of classic rock as a whole. The reason why I think non-prog lovers enthuse over this band (and can't stand stuff like Genesis and Gentle Giant) is because I think only three Pink Floyd albums qualify as progressive. Those three albums are WISH YOU WERE HERE, ANIMALS, and THE WALL. The rest of their output is decidedly non-prog (falling more along the lines of psychedelic rock), including their most popular (and overrated) album, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON.
Forgive me if this topic has been done to death, but I just heard Money on the radio and I had to vent.

I totally disagree, have you ever listened to the entire Dark SIde of the Moon album? 
Do you know what is the meaning of "Progressive"? Or have you ever listened to "Atom heart Mother"? Or the incredibly weird Umma.....whatever, no matter how much I like these earlier Floyd albums, they are definitely Prog.

It's just over-exposure. Money, Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2 and Wish
You Were Here are radio staples (well in the States, not in Europe) and
hearing anything played incessantly on classic rock radio is bound to
turn you off.
DSOTM is a phenomenal album. Epoch-making stuff and one the seminal
records of the 70s. Everything Floyd did from Meddle through to Final
Cut is worth anybody's time of day. A great body of work.
Then again maybe you just don't like Floyd. Fair enough.

I'd agree with arcer, but I'd say everything from "Piper..." through to "Final Cut" is great.
Maybe "More" isn't so great, "AMH" has weak spots (Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast), and "Final Cut" is a bit like The Wall part II, but everything else shows a band strongly progressing and writing very strong and genre-defining Prog Rock - with only a handful of songs (mostly on "Piper...") as exceptions.

Give me one good and intelegent reason why any of the albums I list are not prog, and "is pop music" is not a valid excuse for an album not being prog.

Notice I did not list More Obscured by Clouds or The Division Bell since I don't think these qualify as prog, but those are it, everything else is prog. I promise.

I agree, though I think TFC and "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" are excellent. Pink Floyd were always making PROGRESSIVE abums until TFC. Ehn...the term is useless anyway.

I think you're forgetting such progressive works as Echoes and Atom Heart Mother. Let us not forget The Narrow Way, Grantchester Meadows, Saucerful of Secrets, Us and Them and so on. These are epic (or mini-epic) prog tracks all the way.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! You make a statement like that and it makes me wonder if you even know what "progressive" even means. DSOTM is one of the greatest prog rock albums of all time. Yea, you say it is overrated (I disagree) but it doesn't matter. It is still a prog rock masterpiece. Have you even heard it all the way through, not just listening to Money on some FM station? Have you heard Atom Heart Mother or Meddle all the way through? You are entitled to your opinion but my opinion of yours is that it is a joke.

Strange, for me, the Wall is one of their least progressive. Itīs
conceptual, but not much progressive. The songs are more
straightforward and radio-friendly.
If Atom Heart Mother and Meddle are not progressive, what is?

If the first side of Atom Heart Mother isn't prog then what is?
Meddle is a great album and so is Dark side of the moon.
I can't understand the logic of those who can DSOTM .Isn't the great gig in the sky a progressive masterpiece

Hmmmmmmm, I love alot of Floyd's output but cannot rave as others do on their earlier works.Yes DSOTM is very good album but I much prefer Wish you were here.I do not hold them as highly in the prog echelons as I do others.They are fine musicians but their music is not as complex or involved as other top proggers;nor is it as good.They were always more accepted by the radio djs and media for some reason.Don't know if that was luck or what.But I do know they escaped the great purge in the UK around 1977 that savaged Yes only a year after they,(Yes) had topped every poll imaginable especially the Melody Maker's.This has been a source of discontent for me from that time.I still hold them dearly as they give me great musical pleasure.I loved the Division Bell but I cannot put them at the top of the prog hemisphere.
