I love EKSEPTION and TRACe and obvious RICK VAN DER LINDEN!
 
So this interview arrived right to my heart pierces it because Rick will excite me always with its music!
 
P.s.: without polemics... But... Why all the Keith Emerson's adepts surclasses Emerson... While it does not happen with other keyboards wizards?

                                        Der Linden, here's very good news:

In the late Sixties, EKSEPTION and Rick Van Der LINDEN were among the first musicians to create a blend of musical styles that went from classical music to pop and jazz. Extremely popular thanks to its instrumental covers of Ludwig Van BEETHOVEN ("The Fifth") and Aram KHATSATURJAN ("Sabre Dance"), the Dutch line-up was replaced by TRACE in the year 1974. This new band followed in the path taken by EKSEPTION, becoming thus a Progressive rock power-trio led by the keyboards of its virtuoso leader. A serious counterpart to EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER ! "An Ekseptional Trace" includes a previously unreleased live recording of TRACE in 1977, with Ian MOSLEY, future co-founder of MARILLION on drums. EKSEPTION is also honored there with a stage performance of the band's revival in 2003. Two historical documents that are a tribute to the unique talent of Rick Van Der LINDEN, who recently passed away...

Two members of Ekseption died with a difference of  3 months. So sorry about that.

Cor Dekker: a great bass player.

Rick van der Linden:a great keyboard player, composer and arranger.

I`m going to remember Ekseption with good arrangements and playing to pieces of music like:

"Aria", "Siciliano in G", "Ave Maria", "Picadilly Sweet", etc.

Good to hear from Canada, this was Rick his second homeland, as I remember he lived half the year in St Catherins near The Niagara Falls. And what a coincidence, I have stayed there too when we wanted to visit The Niagara Falls and were invited to stay one night by Canadian friends we met in Toronto.

I am looking forward to that Trace DVD and perhaps some live footage from early Ekseption that was last month on the Dutch tv as a tribute to Rick.

Truly a huge loss. At the same time great interview I listen to my Trace and Ekseption albums quite frequently.

So sorry to hear about the Rick. He was a truly great musician and an inspirational performer. Let's hope the possibility of a Trace DVD enables a new generation of fans to appreciate his unique talent.

I just talked with a good friend of Rick. He had attented the ceremony of the cremation's day, very impressive was the musical tribute Rick: on stage was Rick's coffin, surrounded by many known Dutch musicians like members from Ekseption, Max Werner from Kayak and even Jan Akkerman who was a very good friend of Rick. Jan delivered two inspired guitar soli on this unforgettable tribute. Rick his wife has received lots of e-mails from known musicians, including Phil Collins and Keith Emerson. And Paul McCartney even phoned Inez!

By the way, Musea is busy to put music from Trace on DVD!

It was very sad news for me.I love music by EKSEPTION and TRACE very much.Rick Van Der Linden with his famous Hammond organ signed on my heart ineffaceable TRACE.I salut his memory.

I was just on the Ekseption webpage and was happy to see a link to some concert footage of Rick and the band in concert and in the studio. It shows off ricks abilities, and his need for perfection. His was a classy act.

I also read that the bass player of Ekseption Cor Dekker passed away in October 2005.

When I interviewed Rick I asked him about his relationship with Penny De Jager, a sexy and crafty female dancer who acted in Toppop (the famous Dutch popmusic programm in the Seventies) when the original artist couldn't come or there were no images available. It was not the most pleasant period in his life because she was very eager to be in the spotlights and she had a hole in her hand ...

I agree with Flying Teapot that Rick was a very nice person. And those who were lucky to witness the Dutch tv special about Ekseption could see Rick with an amazing Hammond organ solo and playing The Sabre Dance and, as Flying Teapot described: "his long frizzy blond hair, his eccentric coat, had stitched patterns, and with like a sheep fur wool lining." That was Rick too!

So sorry to hear of the passing of Rick Van der Linden.

When living in Holland in the sixties and trhoughout the years I have been a big fan of his work in Ekseption and Trace. And always cherish a moment in my life that I had a chance to meet him.

Rick was a no frills kind a person, I met him one day while driving the regular bus back from School. He was on his way to a recording studio in Hilversum, and I spotted him rigt away, his long frizzy blond hair, his eccentric coat, had stitched patterns, and with like a sheep fur wool lining. Some chains around his neck, one with a peace sign, and his partner with him looked sort of like him but female, it was dancer Penney de Jaeger.

We had a friendly conversation, he was sooo down to earth. I will miss him, its unfortunate when such a talent passes away, the things in his brain that never will be developed. But we have a vast library of great recordings.

Goodbye Rick, Heaven just got a great keyboardist for its greatest band ever.

Great player, sad loss. I always vastly preferred Trace to ELP, though sadly both my Trace albums have disappeared from my collection. The Dutch scene was amazing in the early 70s with Trace, Ekseption, Solution, Focus and Golden Earring all making superb music.

What a great progressive keyboardist and what a great loss.  He died pretty young.  Great interview Erik.  Thanks to you, we have a glimpse into the mind of a great virtuoso.  I just recently discovered Trace, being from America it's hard to find this stuff but the advent of the computer has brought a lot of great music to my doorstep.
