Topic: a nice slice of "Lamb" Posted: January 29 2006 at 13:08 |
I'm of course talking about The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, the Genesis masterpiece. Listened to it with a couple of friends last night and I'm still discovering new bits hidden within, even after hearing it countless times. My friend Joe gave this sentiment about the Lamb: "The next album HAD to suck because there's no way they could have topped this." Very true, in my opinion. Tracks like "Counting Out Time", "The Lamia" and (personal favorite) "The Colony Of Slippermen" have new meanings (it's all about getting laid!), and the album in general just rocks my socks. Great stuff.
Love

the next album didn't suck though. I think ATOTT is a hell of a lot better, but both are excellent.

The ghost of dr. Freud is present on the whole The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album, it's all about sex, lust, fear and agression, that's why The Lamb is so compelling and varied. I won't say it's their best but perhaps their most original and touching effort !

Counting out time is one of the worst Genesis songs ever written. What were they thinking? Pop trash on one of the greatest albums in prog history! "Take it away Mr. Guitar!" Pop puke if I may say so! Ahh, but the next song makes it so easy to forget the previous... And another thing. The next album had to suck? A trick of the tail sucks? We are on different wavelengths.....

"The Lamb" is a decent album from such a great band as Genesis was...
Compared to five-star masterpieces like "Foxtrot" or "Selling England" the lamb deserves "B-" for disc one and "D+" for the second disc.
Too much of Gabriel and Banks... almost no Hackett which is sad

"Counting Out Time" was just an incredibly fun and funny song, something entirely too lacking in most progressive bands, who weren't known for their humour. Luckily there was Zappa, who had some even dumber and funnier songs, to contrast the unbelievable complexity.

I wouldn't go so far as saying The Lamb drawfs any other efforts. I prefer Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound. The Lamb is still a great album and drawfs, in my opinion, any other release to come including A Trick Of The Tail. Collins = Uck!!!
