I donīt think this has been discussed before... Is anyone aware that Steve Walsh once auditioned to be the lead vocalist in Yes. I think this was quite some time ago Aparently he didnīt seem to hit it off with Chris Squire, but the rest of the band were impressed. Any thoughts or information on this? |

I had never heard this before either. I personally don't think it would
have been a good fit. Yes definitly needs that airy, upbeat voice that
Anderson, Horn and Squire provided. If Walsh were the vocalist it would
have sounded like Rabin singing full time. It would be to hard to
overcome that sound and feel as if it were still Yes.
I did like the diversity it brought to the 80's albums by having two vocalists, Rabin complementing and contrasting Anderson's voice, which over the course of a disc can become a little much (IMHO). Off topic... I must say that I am truly dishartened by what has become of Walsh's voice over the past twenty years. I saw them on 'Power' tour mid-eighties and was blown away by how off-key and unable to reach his old notes or even sustain the mid range. Cigarettes have made his voice a raspy, untuned shell of what it used to be. I am suprised that they even release live albums, as the live forum is a horrible showcase for him nowadays. I can't listen to 'Device-Voice-Drum' or 'Live at the Whiskey' without cringing. |

Never heard this B4 and have read just about everything there is to read about YES! Roger Hodgson auditioned though! I think it would have been interesting as I think his vocals would have been suited to YES music and he can write a decent song or two!

I remember reading about this on The Internet about a year ago, I will have to try find it again. But I agree with you about his voice, when I listen to songs like Jouney from Mariabron (spelling?) and hear his recent stuff, he does tend to strain his voice. I think itīs time to investigate more Proto Kaw!! |

The only way one would know how Steve Walsh would have sounded with Yes, is if he recorded with them. It is a big guess now. When he still had the power in his voice I liked him better then Anderson. But Anderson fits with Yes. We never will know what Yes would have sounded like with a different singer. |

If Steve had auditioned I imagine it would have been after his bands Streets collapsed and rejoining Kansas in 1985. I don't think it would be a good fit either. He would have never used his lower range which is very rich. Steve Walsh had his battles with drugs and alcohol which affected his voice and personality but he is is now clean. Steve also had a throat surgery earlier in this decade that caused his voice to sound like it did on the DVD project. His voice now sounds as good as anytime since the 70's. I have seen Kansas 4 times in the last two years and I can guarantee he is sounding great. Actauly I went expecting to hear him and cringe the first time but was pleasantly surprised at how good he sounded. I have even heard him on back to back nights and he didn't lose anything. You could check out his Shadowman LP he released last year to verify that.
You need to Get the Wait of Glory Dr. Know. Fantastic CD.

Well it's interesting to see why yes wouldn't accept Walsh as their vocalist. I
can't imagine what yes would sound like with him all I know is how good he sounded with Kansas. I like Walsh's voice a lot more than Anderson's. |

Leaven is from Before Became After released in 2004. I recommend both CDs. I like the new one a little better only because the rest of the band has more experience in recording. I have that book too and he is a great composer one of my all time favorites too.
Pots said: "WHO CARES IF STEVE WALSH AUDITIONNED FOR YES A LONG TIME AGO YES IS YES AND IT'S OKAY LIKE THAT." Pots, Steve Walsh would have auditioned to replace Jon Anderson in Yes in the 80's. So the idea was could you hear him singing Yes's songs? It is for things like this we have a forum to discuss such nonsense. Edited by Garion81 |

I read this somewhere a long time ago, can't remember where. I did find this on the alt.music.yes FAQ page (the link is no good anymore though). One time, Trevor Rabin from Yes called me. This was after Jon Anderson left, and they were looking for a replacement singer. I did go out there [to California in 1990] and jam with themTrevor, Tony Kaye, Chris Squire, and Alan Whiteall real nice guys. At the first practice, we were already writing a new song. And that was a strange experience, not knowing these guys. Edited by ClemofNazareth |

Despite I don't like Jon Anderson's voice at all and love Walsh's voice, I believe the only voxcalist for Yes is Jon Anderson. Iván |

I like Walsh in his prime much more than Jon Anderson , that said I feel that Walsh's voice isn`t right for the type of prog Yes made , same as Anderson's voice I doubt would have worked in Kansas. Steve sings well on Shadow man and I`m pleased for him personally that he has bounced back from those drugs and things as it was so sad to witness back when live at the whiskey came out a man who had everything become a shell of his former self. One of my friends said when he saw his picture on the back of the inner sleeve of live at the whiskey "my God Steves turned into Iggy Pop" But Steve is a creative genius , always has been always will be and uses his voice despite limitations to good effect , I doubt his once brilliant voice will ever return (to what I consider to be the best voice ever in rock) that said he will utilizes what he has left to a great effect anyway prog o matic Edited by prog o matic |

Well wouldn't he need Kerry Livgren's songs to do that? Actually, the last show I saw of his in November he was hitting even the high parts at the end of SFA and I was standing no more than 5 feet from him. Steve does some interesting things in his solo works but for some reason they never have the same emotion as when he sang songs written by Kerry Livgren.
