Topic: The United States of America Posted: February 28 2006 at 20:26 |
I have heard a lot of acclaim for this album, even hearing it being called the first prog album. Are there any opinions or people that own it? I have been wanting it for a while, and wan't to hear what you guys think.

The United States of America was way ahead of its time. Way ahead of anybody else recording at that time.

I don't know if I'd call it the first
prog album...but I think it's a great album that's really a great mix
of avant-garde rock and electronic music. They were definetly
ahead of their time as Catholic Flame said.
I'd recommend it!

USOA is a really enjoyable listen if you are interested in the early roots of prog. I wouldn't say that it was ahead of its time though, it was right where it should have been.
There is however another album from the same year, 1968, that is just as good if not better in some ways that no one on this site ever talks about. Its the self titled album from Aorta. I'm pretty certain that if Aorta had used a Mellotron or a Chamberlin instead of real strings and choir alot more people would be touting its greatness. Their 2nd album however bears no resembalence to the 1st album and should be avoided at all costs.
If you do decide to acquire it (USOA) look for the version with all the bonus tracks on it from the Sundazed lable.

dead things don't talk too well, they've got a shaky sense of diction.

^ You could also say that about the group Touch also from the USA.

If you like the USOA album, check out the "followup", "American Metaphysical Circus" by Joe Byrd & The Field Hippies. Neither album is prog, more psych, like Aorta, Touch, and incidentally, Fever Tree.

USA = great album, I always say its what Portishead would have sounded like if they were around in the 60s, or another comparison would also be sort of like some of the Velvet Underground songs with Nico singing,

Silver Apples is easily one of my top 5 bands from the 60s, music way ahead of its time, Hiphop before there was Hiphop, not in the aspect of Rap, but those beats...all HipHop,
Ive heard of White Noise before, but never got around to checking em out, would like to soon though,
