Why would Zappa lie about something like this? To make him un-cool to the stoners?

He smoked. Nicotine is a drug, period!

On the subject of sugar, very few street drugs can cause long-term health problems from chronic use any more serious and insidius than diabetes mellitus type 2. Sounds like a joke, but hang around on a med/surg floor for awhile.

Every chemical compound is a drug and they all have different effects on the body.  When the general public mention drugs they usually mean narcotics or substances that the body would not normally produce or use.  I would say that nicotene falls into this catagory but sugar (sucrose) doesn't.
When people get lost in thought it's often because it's unfamiliar territory.

To my knowledge, -according to what i read on the subject-, zappa was too paranoid about police to take the risk to deal with illicit substances. I've read that he was someone who wanted to control all, and that's why he was afraid of any substance making him loose this sense of control.
He said one time that he hated people who don't assume their acts because they were stoned.

I've also read that he was even against weed cause one of his drummers loose the sense of rhytm cause of pot.

Despite my admiration for most of his works, i always found him a little pretentious, and that's probably because he wasn't cool enough.

I don't see why he'd lie about that.

Doesn't sound like he needed it either. hahaha

He didn't lied IMO. He was just on tobacco/coffee.
But all his musicians were big starshoots!

Yes it's not the problem. His music was rather cold and cerebral, intellectual (that's not pejorative BTW).

I don't think Zappa would lie about it, though the argument that his music is so complex I think is not a valid argument. Countless band in the 60s used drugs to push music much farther than it had ever gone before. Beatles, Doors, etc. I think it was just how he conducted himself.

Frank Zappa was a very idealistic guy.  Anyone who read his book sees how passionate he was about his ideals (especially on censorship).  I don't think a guy who is that idealistic, highly intelligent, and very anti-drug use would be a drug user.  I don't doubt that he tried some hard stuff in the early- to mid-sixties, but I think he disliked it and so went totally clean (coffee and cigs don't really count, and that stuff about sugar being a drug is nonsense) by the early- to mid-seventies at the latest.

I think it's somewhat reasonable for a guy who tried and disliked some sh*t when he was in a sixties psych group and then went and stayed clean to claim to be a drug-free individual.

It remains to prove that he tried some hard stuff.
I rather think he tried smoking one time, been ill and that's all.

Another similar character in prog history for the psychotropic abstinence is Ian Anderson. Another heavy cigarette smoker who ruined his voice BTW and who was maybe on booze as well.

He never did quite get the idea of cocaine, though:
