The Running Man - "The Running Man" (Neon 1972) This British trio released a decent album that varied between melodic, piano-led ballads and quite raw heavy progressive rock with lots of distorted guitar and sax-work. The complex and lengthy "Alone" also features some not so very virtuoso played organ. They also managed to give the arrangements some tasteful details, like the trumpet-intro to "Find Yourself". "Spirit" is a rough and brutal track that ends in something that borders on avant-garde noise with lots of disharmonic piano and feedback. The contrast is quite big to tasty and melodic tunes like "Higher and Higher" and "Nicholas". The title-track and "Look and Turn" are both in a more straightforward hard rock vein, but not bad at all. The main musician in the band seemed to be guitarist Ray Russell who had a sometimes very fuzzed and distorted way of playing. The lack of a real standout track and the pointless noodling at the end of "Alone" are some flaws, but fans of heavy progressive rock and melodic 70's rock will find this to be a listenable, although not classic album. This record was interestingly enough the last release on RCA's progressive label Neon. |
