Greg Lake was quite good up to Brain Salad Surgery. Peter Gabriel, of course. And then there's Richard Sinclair, Robert Wyatt and Steve Hillage but what about Thijs van Leer yodelling?

for better or worse hamill is the most unique voice in all of prog.

Fire up the flux capacitor ! We're taking this Delorean through all four dimensions.

What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum.

Not prog but Russel Mael of Sparks. Not necessarily good either!

For my choice of unique female singers - I can't go past Gilli Smyth and her "space whispers"..

I'd like to mention Anna Meek of Catapilla. she is a kind of female Peter Hammill with a defect: she is stuck in screaming mode. I like her vocals though. and they are certainly unique

We're talking "most unique" here, and not necessarily "best." Right?

Then  I would have to say Jon Anderson.

I always thought Geddy Lee and the guy from Supertramp, Rodger Hodgson had somewhat similar voices. Outside of these three everybody was trying to sound like Peter Gabriel.

I even thought of Bjork. But she's too recent I suppose since we're talking prog history.  Could she be considered Prog, Avant-Pop-Prog?

BTW, did anybody else catch Jon Anderson sitting in with the house band on Jimmy Kimmel Live this past week?

Fates, where you been hiding ??????????????????? and you know Greggy isn't the best or the most unique

Yes he is... on both accounts! And don't you forget it!!

Well, its hard to say one vocalist is THE best but Greg Lake is one of the very best. (John Wetton in KC too!)

I think if "unique" actually means what it should mean (with no similarity to others in the genre), then the one that comes to my mind is Mr. Doctor (Devil Doll). That's because most of the ones mentioned (Hammill, Geddy Lee, ... etc) have been copied by many others.

This is closely related to a previous topic discussed about vocalists who sound similar, and I don't think Mr. Doctor was mentioned there.

All the best freaks are here!

Oh my god.  His singing sounds like he is trying to talk while he is yawning.  Its so obnoxious that I can't listen to Radiohead for more than a minute or two without wanting to kill myself.  Now that certainly is unique.
