Wishbone Ash
They didn't start out prog., especially with AOR radio hits like (Blowing Free), but they did move in that direction on later albums. Great band, saw them live in Miami in the 70's

Magnum have some good songs of hard rock, aor etc,the voice is good, but I prefer the guitars of wishbone ash ,they made long jams or instrumental discharges, and more elaborated( I base my opinion in some songs of both groups ,that I know)

Ash every time for me. Even though they made plenty of mediocre records! Argus is one of the classics of the early seventies, a record I'm always going to want to play on a more or less regular basis. Whereas I'll live quite happily without ever hearing a Magnum song again...

Wishbone Ash
This must be one of the oldest polls on PAs? It celebrates it's 1st birthday this week. |

Wishbone Ash!
I had to vote for them just because of their magnificent album "Argus". A timeless classic. |

Out of the two I definitley prefer Wishbone Ash, mainly because I've never been able to get into Magnum (yet).

I think I'm gonna go for Magnum, as overall I think they are far more consistent than Wishbone Ash as although 'Argus' is definitely one of my favourite albums, they did a fair few undistinguished (in my opinion, anyway) albums that did nothing for me...Magnum have one of rock's very best vocalists- Bob Catley is one of the most emotional performers in rock music, and you get the sense he's putting everything into the vocal. That said, I don't see what these bands have in common really anyway... |

Absolutely no contest.
Magnum are good but Ash are something really special. And Ash aren't hard rock or anything like it. Their early albums are blues influenced prog and their later ones intelligent guitar rock (with the odd minor exception). |

MAGNUM are more proggy & have one of the best vocalists of any genre! For those who have not heard of Magnum, listen to 'Wings Of Heaven' & 'Vigilante'! Both ***** albums! |

Two points: 1. Wishbone Ash are NOT what I would call "hard rock." (They are what I'd call "guitar rock," or simply "rock," or even "classic rock.") No power chords, no screaming vocals -- they are really nothing like Deep Purple, or others of the hard rock, pre-metal ilk. 2. Who in the heck are Magnum? Seriously, I've never heard of them -- by their name, they sound like a metal band. |
