Albums that are so good that...

I have a few thousand cds but still can never find anything to play - I stand in front of my racks for ages trying to decide! It's a good point though, with all my choice are there any albums to be treated rather like the I Ching. You may say - "what the hell is he talking about?" Well, many years ago I had a friend who was into the I Ching and he used to keep it wrapped in silk and only bring it out on special occasions. Well, yes, I thought he was nuts too but you get the drift.

To return to the point (I can get a bit like Ronnie Corbett), I suppose it would have to be just my favourite album "Fandangos in Space" by Carmen. I have bought two copies, one of which was the American version - obtained recently from my usual bootleg supplier in St Petersburg, Russia. This has a different cover to the original vinyl and cd release. I will only take this one in the car - the other one doesn't leave the house in case the car got stolen. I do only listen to it every so often and that is partially due to not wanting to overplay it.

I do that too, stand in front of my CDs and ponder about what to play!  I have a lot of stuff to play and I think: I really want to play this, but I played that last week and the week before that... and what do I play?  Haha, the one album I've played on numerous occasions.  I don't dislike any of my music, but some great albums get left unplayed for ages!

Caress of Steel by Rush - Its awesomeness and the memories it carries from my youth are sacrosanct.

A Flame to the Ground Beneath by Lost Horizon - It's so powerful that I believe there may be dilution by overplaying it.

Marillion's Brave. I try to stay away from it because I don't want to overplay
it; however, it's very difficult to stay away from it. It's simply the best disc I
own.

After the initial onslaught of finding and listening to a favoriye album of all time I inevitibly put it aside to be played only once in awhile to keep the initial rush fresh in my mind when I do play it again.
eg. Yes; Close to the Edge and Gentle Giant; Free Hand, I've owned since they were released in the early 70's. Nowadays I've only have played them about once every two years but I know them so well they are still my favs .

There are several albums i wish I hadn't overplayed. Master of Puppets, In Absentia, Roots, Blackfield, Rust In Peace, On the Sunday of Life, and Leviathan.

I'm being very careful not to overplay Ghost Reveries.

I'm not playing The Snow Goose, The Last Bright Light, Runrig's Proterra or Argus at the moment, just to give some other stuff a chance.

In a few weeks I'll go back to them and will doubtless love them more than ever. The Tain and Book of Invasions by Horslips never get boring however much I play them, though, which is very often.

I'm currently trying to get into VDGG and King Crimson and failing completely, but Gentle Giant are improving with every listen to the point where they are now amongst my favourite bands.
