Topic: The Velvet Underground Proto prog Posted: May 28 2006 at 15:05 |
VU influenced alot of krautrock bands like Can and Faust and had some
pretty experimental noisy songs. on their album "andy warhol" they had
a 17 minute song. this was only in 1967, the only song over ten minutes
i remember hearing is the last one on FZ's freak out!
vu for proto prog!

No. Interesting band for sure, but they were all about being raw, simple and sloppy as hell, which goes against the entire basis of prog. Experimental does not automatically equal prog, the VU were far more of an early punk band.

A month ago i would have said no. But i have listened a lot to Yeti - Amon Duul II lately. Velvet Underground influence is huge here. You can also hear it in other ADII and Can records. So i think yes definitely.
I think that ADII's Yeti is at least as raw as White light white heat and a lot rawer than then the other VU records.

Yes. They were possibly the only band to have been very influential on the development of both prog and punk. Also very much a conceptual band - gifted classically trained musicians like John Cale and Lou Reed experimenting with dissonance and deliberately hiring a drummer (Maureen Tucker) with no experience of drumming to see what would emerge.

I wondered when they would crop up...I think I'm going to leave it open until I play their stuff again for the minute as although they are a very obvious influence on 'Krautrock' acts, I could imagine this opening a big can of worms due to the big punk influence they have.

Oh, no! VU are PROTO-PUNK.
One of the truly groundbreaking and revolutionary band, but nothing I repeat NOTHING to do with prog.
True, they influenced Krautrock, but not only that. They influenced entire punk/new wave/post punk/garage sound.....

There is definately an influence on VDGG.I believe they also influenced early Pink Floyd a little. They were definately a major part of the Underground scene at the time which had an enormous influence on early Prog - especially the Gothic & experimental sides.

Interestingly, this was actually one of the first threads I started upon arriving at PA (of course, being in my infancy as a progressive rock fan). The reactions at that stage were quite different.
