Feel
free to drop by when you are in Italy, as I still have some vintage
Barolo (lovingly collected by my late father, who was a lover and
connoisseur of fine wines) secreted in my cellar. I must admit it's not
my favourite, as it is a bit to strong for my taste - but it is
undoubtedly one of the best wines to drink with roast red meat or game.
I'm more of a white wine person myself, and I absolutely love dessert
wines!
I've
almost given up drinking beer, as it seems to disagree with me most of
the time. However, I've tried some quality Belgian beers (like the ones
Erik mentioned), and I have to say they're fantastic.

Heaven was drinking Chianti Classico with meats, bread, and the
vineyard's own olive oil, on a patio looking out over the Tuscan
hills. My wife and I vacationed in Italy a few years ago, and it
was the best trip I've ever been on, I don't think anything can top
it. I can't wait to get back.
We're also very fond of a particular Italian white called Vernaccia, also grown in that region.

You certainly mean Vernaccia di San Gimignano, which is probably the only white wine of note produced in Tuscany (and hopefully you also visited its town of origin, the beautiful San Gimignano of the many towers). IMHO, the best whites in Italy are produced in the valleys just beneath the Alps, in the area called Alto Adige. They are just out of this world! BTW, I lived in Tuscany for eight years, and I see what you mean... Even if I'm more used to it than you are, the picnic you described sounds heaven to me too!

That's what I mean, and yes we visited San Gimignano and it was incredible. We had the most delicious pastries (and cappuccino) at this place called Marcella's.

Erik, they all look tasty although the apple one might be something of an acquired taste for me. Never been a real fan of fruity beers. Which beer is your favorite?

Kriek is awesome! I last had some a couple of years ago, when I visited Brussels. The apple one sounds interesting too - I have to admit to a liking for fruity beers!
