Great song, great album by Iron Butterfly. But what does the title mean?
And while we're at them. Any anecdotes about them you want to share with us?

Correct, it was supposed to be what "In the garden of Eden" sounded like after too much of whatever it was they took too much of.

I'm not surprised there's a connection to certain substances.
Isn't the bass line of the song criminally close to that of Cream's "Sunshine of your Love"?

Supposedly Doug Ingle wrote the song while consuming copious amounts of wine & In The Garden of Eden came out as In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Take a listen sometime to "The Residents Present the Third Reich 'n' Roll". At one point the main riffs of both songs are played simultaneously.

Cream could have found inspiration to "Sunshine of yor love" while they were touring The US west coast in - I believe - '67 ? Maybe they heard "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" live ?

To be honest I find Iron Butterfly to be a fair bit less innovative than the band they are often compared to, Vanilla Fudge. Some of Iron Butterfly's stuff is horribly dated now- 'Flowers and Beads' is laughable schlock psychedelia that is exactly the kind of psych that gets lampooned on a regular basis. Other tracks on 'In A Gadda Da Vida' stand up better though- I particularly like 'Are You Happy', 'My Mirage' and 'Most Anything You Want'. However, as for the title track I find the opening few minutes and the last bits to be great but the rest of it to be padded noodling. Great in bits, though. Their other albums like 'Ball' and 'Heavy' are quite decent too.
Captain Beyond I've yet to succumb to- I find it a bit over-elaborate and wordy considering the band's pedigree, to be honest, with little that ever stays in my memory after I've played it.
