Do you think Loreena McKennitt's music should be considered Progressive? I like her stuff and the music is very good and her band is top notch. I'm curious as to what you think.

No

I think it is strictly Celtic or Folk.

But I agree with you that her music is great. She has such a beautiful voice. I'm a huge fan of Celtic music and she is one of my favorite artists.

Certainly not progressive enough when compared to the likes of Yes or King Crimson. If you like Loreena McKennitt, then check out Mostly Autumn. A great band.

I only have two albums by her. "The Mask and Mirror" is quite good too, while I found the other a bit boring. I'm not a great fan of her voice either: obviously she can sing very well, but there is something contrived about her voice that irritates me. In the same vein, I very much prefer Maire Brennan from Clannad.

Prog? There may be some prog elements in her music, but I think it's mostly Celtic folk with a New Age tinge.

Celtic  not prog.

Why don't we make every band that sounds different from the mainstream progAngry

It's getting more and more absurd

Anything between The Visit and Live in Paris & Toronto is great stuff. Beautiful.

Clap

Clannad is definitely beautiful man. Loreena is great but I too prefer Marie Brennan.

I have noticed over the years that an awful lot of woman really enjoy her stuff, and the woman I do know who do like her also like other music like prog rock and jazz.

Good analysis!

I would even say that if You own one album from her, it is like you have them all

Nice music, but not superb! She nevers gets passionate on her records (not one ounce of emotional ennervement >> her music stays nice and put)

In this regards she reminds of other Canadian greats like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Their music was always beautiful but nerver passionate (in terms of energy)

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
