Topic: Something Similar! (Tool) Posted: December 14 2004 at 08:42 |
Hiya, I'm new to the forums (how many times have you heard that ;) ) and I am looking for something similar to Tool.
I love Opeth, a bit of Jethro Tull and am getting into The Mars Volta (weird collection I agree) and the genres i'm mostly into are Grunge, Metal, Indie or your trippy Psy Goa stuff, but Tool really hit a cord. Any help?
Thanks

Hello Chunkynut!
I'm a big Tool fan and I can honestly say that there isn't any band quite like them but check out a British band called Oceansize or even Chris Vrenna's (from Nine Inch Nails) band Tweaker they have elements of Tool in them.
You have already mentioned Opeth and The Mars Volta they will always get a mention here. I would also suggest maybe try Muse, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree and Rush.

Welcome to the forums chunkynut
Damm everybody has suggested all the good ones. All I can say is that King Crimson's 'Construction of Light' album is a good slice of agressive wierdness too.

Tool is one of those bands that few really sound like. Most prog metal bands are far more technical and less dark. Dead Soul Tribe would be at the top of my list, they have a very strong resemblance to Tool. There's also a band called Earshot who I consider somewhat mediocre, but they're extremely influenced by Tool. You may like Opeth, and I would also check out Porcupine Tree's album Signify, which has a simmilar feel to some of Tool's work (albiet less dark). If you haven't heard A Perfect Circle (Maynard's other project), I would also give them a listen.
Good luck fellow Tool fan

Thanks all , (well the resonable answers )
I will definately look out for Oceansize, King Crimson, Dead Soul Tribe, and Azrael2112's suggestions of Fates Warning, OSI, Dream Theater (edit: actually i listen to dream theater and nightwish, have none of my own but i like them a lot).
My tastes have been very dark recently with lashings of trippy stuff which is making me a bit disconected, but hey, isn't that what musics for
I'll go throught the bands mentioned pages' and download whatever i can see what I like then get the albums, its great to listen to some new bands!
