There's no way I'm gonna choose between the two most important albums of my early teens.

Great albums both, but at present I'd rather listen to MoP than to RiB - the former being much closer to prog than the latter.

I'd probably get scorned by some for saying this, but I thought "Angel of Death" was an extremely progressive song. Four different verses, two choruses, tempo changes everywhere, etc. That's also my vote for the greatest thrash metal song ever. |

Scorned by me? Not on your life... In fact, I quite agree with your analysis. Probably, the main thing about RiB is that it's way too short - a flaw shared by another almost-prog-metal masterpiece of the same period, the fantastic "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" by Megadeth.

Reign in Blood is too... Fast. And too short (only 29 minutes) Every song reminds too much of each other, though Raining Blood and Angel of Death are great. South of Heaven is Better.
But Master of Puppets then, oh what a brilliant masterpiece. It's just a brillaint compilation of technical thrash, wonderful lyrics and also some lighter riffs. Maybe the greatest thrash-album ever! Edited by Gomurisu - June 30 2006 at 05:43 |

Metallica wins for me. Slayer's album although being very short does hit home just how the genre can be played . Does anyone agree that if RiB had been about 50 minutes long or so it would be too long for the type of music contained. 29 minutes is ideal for an album of that nature. Most Slayer albums are around the 40 min. Mark and that suits the music all IMO of course.
Master of Puppets is where Metallica peaked IMO. It is a very accomplished but not too pollished like th Black album. MoP was th first Metallica album I bought and stands up to more plays than RiB. The muscisianship on MoP is superior to RiB. IMO. Edited by tdreamer - June 30 2006 at 20:07 |

Master of Puppets has some cool moments. Especially in Sanitarium, the title track, and Orion is a masterpiece.
I hate Slayer, I think everything they have made is crap.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm going to have to go for Reign in Blood. Master of Puppets isn't even my favorite Metallica album, and I love all of Slayer's input from Hell Awaits to Seasons in the Abyss. Reign in Blood is stylistically united, and as such, seems to play as one lengthy song. The mindbending speed and spectacular aggression appeal to me greatly.

Although comparing track to track I prefer Ride the Lightning, Orion is probably my favourite Metallica track. I never really liked Slayer. |

I never understood what was so great about the early Slayer albums. Ok, they're ground breaking and created a new genre (Thrash), and as a guitarist I also appreciate the guitar riffing - I remember spending a few hours trying to play Skeletons of Society. But as an album ... honestly, Master of Puppets smokes any early Slayer album.

^ True Mike, I never understood that either. But I never understood Metallica either. Or Slayer's later albums.
