I bought a Fender Strat this summer, but due to vacation mobilisation and luggage limit, I couldn't buy an amp as well.

Keeping in mind the budget of a 16 year old, and the parental authorities with their acoustic endurances, which brands / watts would you suggest?

Thanks!

I have a Fender Frontman 15R with Reverb that I'm looking to sell in the near future... if you're interested.
I bleed coffee. When I don't drink coffee, my veins run dry, and I shrivel up and die.

i'd sell it to you for.... between $80 and $90, but that doesn't include shipping. Its a nice amp to start out with thats not one of those $60 amps thats got about 10 amps that you couldn't even hear from the other side of the room. This one that I have has a distortion/overdrive setting, has reverb, and your basic bass/mid/treble settings.

relatively cheap and extremely cheerful is the Laney
LC15. This is a 15w valve amp featuring 2 EL84s
and with hi and lo inputs and onboard reverb.
It's a very nice little amp that will give you 'real' tone
on a budget.
While it's not up there with the little Fender all valve
amp (can't remember its name) it will give you valve
tone cheaply and valves are where its at.
Even cheaper and maybe of more interest to you if
you're budget is really tight is a new 15 watt valve
amp from Behringer, the Vintage AC108. according
their website behringer.com the canadian retail price
is Can$89 which is a still a steal.
They describe it thus:
VINTAGER AC108 boasts a 15-Watt power section
with a hand-selected vacuum tube feeding a 20-Watt
8" vintage-tuned guitar speaker. Despite its compact
size, it produces an abundance of power and the
distinct pleasure of classic tube sound.
With a dedicated 2-band EQ plus mid-shift button for
creative sound-shaping and a CD input, the AC108
not only sounds great, it allows you to play along to
your favorite music. Add a dedicated master level
control and a powerful headphone output, and you’re
ready to get your music going.
Sounds good and in tandem with their cheap and
incredibly versatile x-v-amp modelling pedal
Can$109 rrp (amps, cabs etcx) they could be a
combination that might be all you need.

Maybe it's not what you're looking for, but I highly recommend getting a pair of headphones and a modelling unit instead of a practice amp. I use the Line6 POD almost exclusively, but the Johnson J-station is great too- they're discontinued now, so you can get one for under $100 with a little searching. There's a lot of other inexpensive choices...I know a lot of people who love their Korg Pandora, for instance.

They're more versatile and sound better than any practice amp at a comparable price. Plus, if you do eventually get into a performing situation, you can pick up a power amp and a cabinet and still keep the sounds you like. I know for a fact that the POD sounds better than most amps when it's run through a 4x12" cab.

Gee. All the technical vocabulary - I don't know what sounds good...  I only know the fact that I want something to come out of my guitar - the whole question was what would be a good amp / other option that sounds good and costs under 150$ CND?

Whoops...I could have been a little clearer, huh?

If you don't mind the fact that nobody else will be able to hear you (unless you let them borrow your headphones or plug into something with speakers), the headphone amps are great choices. Almost all of them have things like "amp and speaker simulators" which make it sound like you're playing through much more expensive equipment, and you can wail to your heart's content in the middle of the night even with people sleeping a few feet away. And if you stick with the guitar, a good headphone amp can still be useful later on...whereas you'll probably outgrow a little practice amp pretty quickly.

The ones I've liked are the Line6 POD (the new ones are probably over your price range, but used ones are much cheaper and there's thousands of them on eBay, for instance), and the Johnson J-station (used, under $100 US).

There's also the Korg Pandora: they have a few different models..the newest is the PX4...the PX3 is a year older but still very cool and probably right around your spending limit, and the older PX2 is even cheaper...probably about half of what you're willing to spend.

And Zoom has the 505II which is even cheaper (around $50-60 US) and will definitely do the job.

But if you don't want to wear headphones to hear yourself play, I recommend the Line6 Spider II practice amp. It's right on the edge of your price range, but it's got good sounds at any volume and a headphone jack (just in case it's still not quiet enough to keep the parents happy).

I totally agree - Line 6 Pods are AMAZING - with a capital AMAZING.

It's like owning a set of great amps (and effects) - and you can stick it through any cheap practice amp and it'll still sound great. Plug it into a computer running almost any sequencing software and it sounds utterly professional.

I haven't checked out their Pod/Amp combis, but I'd bet they're pretty unbeatable for the pirce.

I had a Pignose that was fun...it sounded terrible, but so did my playing at the time. I think it was more useful as a gimmick to pick up chicks than it was as a musical device.

I just bought my new synth but can't afford an amp or anything at the moment. I've been plugging in a microphone and tying it to my head!

Have you tried plugging the synth into your PC and listening through the PCs speakers?

Sorry I don't. I have neither a digital camera or a scanner to get a picture of my beasty amplifier, but here's one I found on Google image:
