Topic: Yes, Genesis, PFM, Magma...DINOSAURS?!? Posted: July 12 2006 at 09:10 |
The Prog band/ artists of gold period (1967/ 1976) are from a lot definited "DINOSAURS". Even though this definition is offensive, I the use and I find that is nice. But it is just or except for to define them so?
I would define them "GOLDEN CLASSICAL PROG BANDS/ ARTISTS"!!!

At least today they can be considered as dinosaurs. They were big, and
they are kind of ancient in the eyes of today's youth. Many of those
old bands are also "extinct", like dinosaurs.
But what's wrong with dinosaurs? I ask myself. It's not my choice of word if I wish to offend someone.

Most dinosaurs had very small brains, this surely does not appeal to members of the greatest prog. bands ever.

I see nothing wrong with calling them Dinosaurs. It's like if someone said prog Giants or something like that, it would not be offensive in the LEAST bit.
We wouldn't say "oh, giants are slow and dumb, we can't call the great prog bands that!"
Mandrakeroot would you mind explaining to me how being called a dinosaur can be OFFENSIVE???? It really takes determination to find something offensive in the whole dinosaur thing.

It's not offensive to call them "dinosaurs". They're the classic old Prog bands and all Prog started there, so it's good to call them "dinosaurs".

Sorry folks, but the term "dinosaur" is a silly punk era term that is definitely derogatory when used in that way, so I wouldn't say it's not offensive. Hence, I would say these bands were not dinosaurs. I don't like I Can't Dance or any of Yes's post 1980 stuff, but they had the right to continue making music, even if it didn't reflect the tastes of Buzzcocks fans. Perhaps "forefathers" would be a nicer term!

I dont think its that they 'had small brains' or were dumb/slow... whatever...
It might be that but I think its more based on the fact that Dinosaurs are 'old' / 'prehistoric' and they'll go 'extinct'. Becoming 'exctinct' is something that a lot of bands DO NOT WANT TO DO.
I think King Crimson's 'Dinosaur' is a funny play on their being called Dinosaurs... well... Im actually sure it is, cause I read it somewhere... I just forget where...
Great song too... I cant stop listening to it lately.

I wouldn't use the term dinosaurs for these classic prog bands.
They aren't something that paleontologists, in particular, would
dig.
Some call these classic rock bands fossils, but I think classic prog is
something everybody should have the chance to dig. I sure do dig
them

I do think 'dinosaur' is offensive, somebody who couldn't adapt to ... the changing musical styles. Punk indeed. But it's not only offensive, but also incorrect. Bands like Genesis, Yes and King Crimson could adapt, in the case of Genesis and Yes in particular: more than some people would want them to.
The dinosaurs themselves have a thick skin, so they can have it, no offense taken, and I suppose they like it when somebody digs their bones.
We, the dinosaurlovers, should be proud of our tastes.

They're surely dinosaurs in terms that the average guy has to do a lot of dig to find information, tgheir works and people who like them. Of course I'm referring to the old days before the internet has come, but hey, these were my days in the f***ing 80's. they're out of their time now as well, living in a kind of Jurassic Park created to them and their public. However, some of the work of these bands is paradigmatic and, in this sense, beyond time restrictions: Magma's MDK era, Yes' Close to the edge, Genesis' TLLDOB. Although PFM is one of my fav groups I can't think that tgheir work could be considered as remarkable as those cited above by the eyes of the average informed person. Sorry for that.

It used to bother me when I was younger, and the term was first being used. People would say, "Why do you listen to that dinosaur rock?" I would tell them that it was because it was better than most of the modern garbage they listened to. In particular, this applied to people that were into the '80s hair metal bands. Now it doesn't bother me too much. Plus, I don't hear it as often. Many younger people are listening to the classics as well. Not just prog, but good '80s bands too. I see high school kids with The Clash, Joy Division, and The Cure on their book bags. I guess it's okay being a respected dinosaur, but I prefer classic, or founder.

Well, the groups you've listed above are the "Giants" of Prog, among others. At the time, I think the critics of Prog Rock (as usual) were just trying ti find a way to minimize them as already old farts, passe, or finally sold out to commercial success.
Honestly, I don't think it's offensive to call them Dinosaurs, actually more in tribute.

I quite like the term "Dinosaurs", i don't find it derogatory at all - it's quite a compliment! Dinosaurs were great survivors, beautiful, gigantic, intelligent, resourceful....... like Prog!
Look at it this way - Dinosaurs were the most successful species that ever inhabited this planet, they were here for millions and millions of years, recent research reveals they were much more resourceful and intelligent than most gave them credit for. The great meteor catastrophe theory continues to gather credibility and if it wasn't for that they would still be here (some survived, Crocodiles, Lizards, Birds, Fish, Insects...and one tiny mammal). Dinosaurs were a key development in evolution until Man only really entered the scene only 100 thousand years ago, in that short time he's managed to enslave the planet and f**k it up with pollution, and global warming is now at danger level.

I've never heard this term used to describe music of this era. Dinosaurs are extinct last I knew and I don't see this term serving any useful purpose. I do NOT listen to dinosaur music.
Signed PFM, Genesis, etc. enthusiast.

Naw, that era should be known as BDT, or Before Dream Theater.

They were big, and anyone not willing to admit, that they are extinct, is a denier. Thus: DINOSAURS!
