ok so ive just finished recording an album on my home computer and all of a sudden i can't change the pan of any of the tracks, everything comes out 50/50 both speakers which is a problem because volumes add up and its a mess

i have no idea why its doing this to me but my computer won't play anything through just 1 channel

any ideas as to why this is happening and what i can do about it?

Is that just in Cakewalk, or are you getting a MONO sound from Media Player (or other sound applications) too?

MONO from everything so it has to be a sound card problem, it actually started working again for a bout 5 minutes last night but then went back to MONO

You could pick up a reasonable soundcard cheaply - or borrow one from a friend to find out if it's a hardware problem or not.

are you saying open up the computer and check the connections?  I really don't want to screw anything up, but i suppose i could give it a try.

I doubt that checking the connections inside the computer will help - the only cables you'd need to check are the ones going to your speakers.

If you do open up the case, make sure you take appropriate anti-static precautions, as that is just about the only (and most lethal) way you could cause damage to your computer.

If the soundcard isn't properly seated in the slot, then you'd get other issues, not just a fading channel, so I doubt it's that - and the card itself resides in a slot, so there are no other internal connections as far as software audio is concerned: The only internal cables that might be attached to the sound card will come from the CD drive.

What is the soundcard, out of interest?

it's a soundblaster live soundcard
 
I burned the songs on a CD and played them in a different computer and the stereo channels work, so not all is lost
