Just keep on baiting people. Very nice of you to stir the pot and take off for almost a month and not confronting all the people you angered. So I see no reason to leave this thread, which is a pathetic attempt at baiting other forum members, open. |

I really can't add much to what has already been said. Being a longtime Genesis fan, I would have written Marillion off immediately if I thought they were just clones. I was so happy to discover them in 1983. There wasn't much quality prog being recorded at that time.

It is quite obvious to anybody with only limited hearing function that far from being a Gabriel wannabe,Fish styled his vocal delivery on Peter Hammill.
However much the band were influenced by Genesis which of course is a moot point, they hardly sound like them. Check out the 3 Fish-era tracks in the band's bio if you dont believe me! http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=233 |

It's all up to personal taste. I personally don't like Marillion and think they are overrated. I feel they are much more a pop rock band than a prog rock band. Did they rip Genesis off? No more than the next neo prog band. Sure they took a lot of influence from Genesis, but they sound nowhere as good as Genesis, and really don't sound like Gabriel era Genesis to me at all. I guess Script for a Jesters Tear sounds a bit like early Genesis, and this is the one Marillion album I can somewhat tolerate. Did they give anything to prog? Yes and no. As far as progression they gave nothing in my opinion. They did keep the spirit of prog alive though in the ultra prog dead 80's and I do give them credit for that. Again this is all up to personal taste and I don't mean to offend any Marillion fans. They just aren't my cup of tea. Edited by Paulieg - July 30 2006 at 21:33 |

Ugh... Marillion did not, I repeat, did not clone Genesis. Sure there was a strong influence from the group, but do you honestly believe songs like Script for a Jester's Tear and Fugazi sound like Genesis songs? And don't give me the whole "Grendel is a rip off of Supper's Ready" deal, I've heard it all before. And maybe Fish's voice is reminicent of Peter Gabriel's, but there's more Peter Hammill in his voice than anything else. Really, if you think things like this, at least try and back it up.

*hits head against wall, whipes up blood, calms down*
First of all, you're only taking about Fish-era Marillion. And if you really think about it and study the music, you'll find that very little of Fish-era Marillion has anything to do with Genesis, other than:
a) Fish occasionally sounding like Gabriel
b) Fish uses imagery, metaphors to a degree approaching Gabriel
c) "Grendel" is quite a rip-off of "Supper's Ready" at times
You'll also find other things that do not support your accusation of Marillion ripping-off Genesis:
a) Music is much simpler in every way
b) Guitar sound/styledically different, more influenced by David Gilmour that Hackett
c) Fish is Scottish, and mostly does not sound like Gabriel after listenign to both bands on a regular basis for awhile
And that's only for the Fish-era. You saying that it all went downhill after Fish left is a personal opinion, but except for maybe Season's End, which sounds still a little bit like Fish-era Marillion, Hogarth-era Marillion is:
a) Much more subued than Fish-era Marillion
b) Much less cheesy
c) Usually darker and broader subject matter
d) DOES NOT RESEMBLE GENESIS IN ANY POSSIBLE WAY Edited by stonebeard - July 30 2006 at 20:17 |

I've never seen them as genesis clones, completely original sound if you ask me.

I have/had (i can't remember which) the first 2 Marrilion albums, they make average music, and when Fish left they went way downhill. But, what i can't understand is the support they have for being a great prog band. If ever there was a case of pinching someones identity, the ultra boring Genesis could sue the arse of Marrillion, for stealing theirs.
Am i alone in thinking Marrillion are way overrated or does someone actually think they gave something to prog.
Anyway, i'm off for 3 weks, i do hope that big white bites my arse, could make millions out of it.
Prog lover gets arse bitten from a great white.....Sun exclusive.......Waywordson says " i feel sorry for the shark"
See you all in 3 weeks, unless i get booted for having some fun.
