Topic: Blues Rock Posted: August 09 2006 at 13:00 |
It seems that every now and then my Prog jones needs to be set aside for something different. Blues Rock fits the bill nicely. I've picked up quite a few newer Blues Rock CDs and I have a nice collection slowly compiled over the years.
Derek Trucks Band's latest release, Songlines, is not just B/R, but adds a bit o' jazz, and world music. Fantastic is the single best word to describe this release. You get swallowed up in the vibe. DT is one of the hottest slide players I've heard. Duane Allman would be proud, considering Derek Trucks has filled his shoes in the Allman Brothers Band.
Derek Trucks is alos married to another awesome Blues artist, Susan Tedeschi. Her latest, Hope and Desire is a great collection of covers. Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II fill the guitar slots, as well as Susan, a fine guitarist in her own right.
Speaking of Doyle Bramhall II, son of Doyle Bramhall who wrote some tunes for SRV, has some great BR albums; Welcome, Jellycream, self-titled and the powerhouse supergroup, Arc Angels, with Double Trouble and Charlie Sexton. You may alos find the Double Trouble album contains a quasi re-formation of Arc Angels. Susan Tedeschi makes an appearance on two tracks. Eric Johnson shows up too!
Eric Johnson's Bloom and Live: From Austin Texas are great additions to any music collections. While EJ is not strictly stuck in any genre, he can be counted on to add a healthy dose of Blues in his soloing.
Indigenous. Originally a band made up of family members, it has devolved into the launch pad for Mato Nanji, a blues guitar wonderkind with a gravelly voice and perchant for catchy melody lines that stick with you. The latest, Chasing the Sun, is a great place to start with Indigenous. If you want some really smokin' Blues Rock, pick up Live at the Pachyderm, an in studio live recording.
Joe Bonamassa's You and Me is powerful. This one will shake the house. This is Smokin' Joe's fifth (?) album and IMHO, his best. If you love Trower, Led Zep (he covers Tea of One), Hendrix, SRV or any other heavy guitar players, this is one to own. This may also be his best vocal performance.
Eric Gales, the one time Hendrix clone (see; the Eric Gales Band), released Crystal Vision. While swamped in poor, cliched, lyrics/songwriting, his guitar work shines through. EG is not a great vocalist, but he can carry the tune (including a cover of DP's Hush).

What about Gary Moore's blues albums? I haven't listened to any of them properly, though I am a huge fan of his playing.

Great addition! I used to own a few of his and must dig them out again.
What about BBM; Bruce, Baker and Moore?
Has anyone heard any of Trower's newer albums? I really need to get more Trower.

I enjoy it as an alternative from prog etc. Dan. I'm not an expert on it by any means, but it can be very therapeutic. Funnily enough, today I was listening to some Canned Heat, including a track they did with John Lee Hooker (Boogie Chillen no 2 on the All good clean fun sampler).
The guitar sound in blues rock is one I often find to be really good.
Not strictly blues really, but have you come across Chris Rea's 11 CD box set called Blue Guitars. It explores many avenues of blues, although his use of the term can be quite liberal. Great collection though.
BBM was a great project. I think they just did the one album together, which was quite rock orientated. it had a few superb tracks though.

I'm a blues rock aficionado actually- the 60s/70s power trio format is particuarly enjoyable for me.
BBM was a hugely enjoyable return to such fare. Many songs were blatant rehashes of old Cream songs, but one of the songs was possibly my favourite Jack Bruce song ever, 'Where In The World'. A beautiful song- excellent vocals from both Bruce and Moore. If you liked Cream, there's no way you'd be disappointed by this one, imo.
As for Gary Moore's work, I must say it's never done much for me. It's not that there's anything inherently wrong with the music- it's all well played and delivered, for sure- but more or less, every album he's done since 1990 has been a blues one. He's a superbly accomplished player- I wish he'd stretch himself a bit more sometimes...
Not heard the modern Trower work- it's had great reviews, however, in mags like Classic Rock. I know my dad liked his 90s album '20th Century Blues' a lot....

Yeah, one in the same. He's a very talented guitarist, versatile. He and Derek Trucks have been touring with Clapton as the main guitarists.

Nice thread Dan. It's made me dig out one of my Michael Katon albums 'Proud To Be Loud'. I'm really going to enjoy playing that. Great album.

Cool Richard!
It seems whenever I plug in, the blues comes out. There is a "naturalness" to the blues pentatonic scale, like speech. It feels like you are carrying on a conversation.
