HMMMM.
I can see where they're coming from, certainly. I think we may need to let the dust settle a little more before we can really make out what's going on in this scene. |

I agree. The frames are set. All we need is more. |

An interesting idea, but those bands seem to think better in other already existing genres. It seems to be based more on time period/origin than the bands actual sound.

I don't think so. They do have a certain sound that links them. Listening to Oceansize reminds me of Dredg wich sort of reminds me to Pure Reason Revolution. (those are the ones I know and I might add some others too) |

"New prog has connections and overlap with the post-rock movement"
I in no way see how Coheed & Cambria overlap with post-rock.
I think this could be a good idea, but the big argument that is going to occur over this is whether are not the bands are actually "prog".
Remember prog influence in no way constitutes the band being labeled as "progressive".

Interesting, but I agree that some bands would not fit what the majority consider true prog. It is good that these bands are geting some special recognition. It's too easy to just lump them in with indie, or post-rock. This bunch has a bit more going on than the rest.

Pure Reason Revolution, Mew, Muse, The Copper Temple Clause, Oceansize,
The Negatones, The Mars Volta, Coheed & Cambria , Dredg , 3 and the
Mystery Jets should all be put in this genre, IMO. It just sounds like
a great idea. The way things are now, everything is very... Muddy. I
don't like seeing TMV's name alongside Rush, VDGG and GG. It pisses me
off. Also, Coheed & Cambria does deserve some credit for breaking
out of the whole punk/emo stereotype a little. I say use this idea. I'm
ready for some change, and maybe this will help other bands to realize
that they can be a little progressive.

I like The Mars Volta where they are here at PA. They sound alot like the other bands in Art Rock.

^ I personaly feel art rock fits the Mars Volta like a glove.
We differ alot in that respect then Chamberry, I really see no connection between Oceansize, Dredg, Mars Volta, and Muse.

It's true what you say about Mars Volta but they have an alternative/indie/Punk backround (At the drive in) and are still 'easy' for mainstream audiences.(Why,it's a mystery to me.I suppose it has to do something with the system of a down co-tour and that they share a bit of craziness in their music). Some elements of their earlier past can still be traced in their recent works.Pretty much all those bands that you've mentioned share a common vision musically and artistically . From what I've heard of the listen bands I don't think a new genre should be made, because they aren't all that different in sound to many bands already on PA in my opinion. |

If this site is truely about explaining everything that IS prog then, I think, this addition is mandatory. This would create a far more diverse classification than filing everything we can't explain under Art Rock, because god knows I hate such a broad term.

Bah! Wikepedia has hundreds of "new" genres that no one has ever heard of.
I take this with a grain of salt. Remember anyone can make or edit articles on Wikipedia. |

The Mars Volta should stay in art rock.
And (don't get angry if you disagree, im sure there will be lots of you) why couldn't coheed and cambria be alongside rush? in my opinion they sound quite similar at times, even if C&C isn't as progressive. |
