Officer GR to the rescue!
I am not familiar with IG's solo output after he dissolved his band Gillan and rejoined Deep Purple for the "Perfect Strangers" LP. However, all of his solo albums before that are quite good. The ones credited to the Ian Gillan Band are more jazz-rock-oriented ("Clear Air Turbulence" is a fantastic track), the ones credited to Gillan are more straightforward, Purple-style hard rock, with the contribution of the criminally underrated Colin Towns on keyboards and Bernie Tormé's wild, Hendrix-like guitar. "Mr Universe" is excellent indeed (and I LOVE "Future Shock"!). "Magic", the album featuring Iron Maiden's Janick Gers in Tormé's place, also contains some very strong tracks: namely, "Bluesy Blue Sea" (also included in "Gillan's Inn", with Janick himself on guitar), and especially the wonderful "Demon Driver".
