I just got "mob Rules" and "heaven and Hell" and i have to say that they are quickly becoming some of my favorite albums. The riffs are clearly more 80's sounding, but still awesome, and Dio's voice is absolutely amazing, maybe among my top 3 metal vocals. It's definatly not the same Black Sabbath as with Ozzy, but its still kick ass

"Heaven and Hell" is one of the best rock albums ever made in every genre - period. As to RJ Dio's voice... well, I think it speaks for itself. "Mob Rules" may not be up to the same standard, but IMHO it's still an album many bands would kill to be able to produce.

I feel Mob Rules is very underrated. It has some great songs like "Falling off the edge of the world" and "Sign of the Southern cross" Dio was amazing at this time.

Dio is probably my fave rock vocalist, alongside David Coverdale and David Byron. Both those albums you can't argue with- 'Sign Of The Southern Cross' is just astonishing- as good as anything of the Ozzy era, without doubt. The first two albums are excellent, particularly 'Heaven and Hell', but 'Dehumaniser' was a relentless, bludgeoning disappointment, imo.

I don't now care too much for 'Born Again' and 'Seventh Star'. 'Born Again's first side has some decent stuff, particularly the heavy as hell 'Disturbing The Priest' (If not helped by Gillan's silly cackling) and 'Zero The Hero', but the rest of it is cringe inducing, cliche metal redolent of Manowar. 'Seventh Star' is much better musically, but although it's often been said, this really should have been a solo album as intended. There is a noticeable drop in the middle that makes it a bit tedious, and Glenn Hughes isn't my fave singer. I don't mind him, but as a singer with Sabbath it's a marriage made in hell....

I liked a lot of the Tony Martin era stuff- though undoubtedly a bit of a Dio clone, he really did a top job on the songs he did. Check out the stunning track 'The Eternal Idol' with some awe inspiring vocal pyrotechnics and a spellbinding, dark and brooding heavy riff. Also from the same album, 'The Shining' and 'Ancient Warrior' stand up to classic Sabbath with ease. 'Headless Cross' is a more consistent album- the title track is mindblowing and 'When Death Calls' is another fave.

I was disappointed with the Ozzy return to Sabbath, though, That looks like it's done with now anyway, but the fans never did get an album. Still, judging by the way he (man)handled some of the classic 70s stuff, it's possibly for the best....

Some Twenty odd years later and Heaven and Hell/ Mob Rules still sends shivers down my spine, not to mention makes my jaw drop to the floor in amazement of how good Sabbath sounded with Dio. Evil Smile

Sign... is an amazing track and generally both Dio albums are excellent, some of the best Sabbath ever did
different sound from Ozzy but still at their very tops!!!

Heaven and Hell "kicks ass" indeed. Great album!

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

i like dio's voice better, but sabbath had better music when ozzy was in the band.

Dio was the best vocalist Sabbath ever had. Gillan may be technically more accomplished and Ozzy may be their signature voice, but Dio fit Sabbath perfectly - IMHO, he was better with Sabbath than with Rainbow. It's a shame that "Seventh Star", Sabbath's album with Glenn Hughes, is so weak - Hughes is a terrific singer.

You all have a point that Dio is better Than Ozzy.

But without Ozzy, Black sabbath started to sound like another band.

Still, i couldn't imagine Ozzy Singing for example "Sign Of The Southern Cross".

to you, sir, from this site's biggest Glenn Hughes fan! I sort of agree with you on "Seventh Star" - musically is not the strongest album Iommi has recorded, and its best feature by far is the cracking performance by GH. Hughes and Iommi sound far better together in the other two albums they cut after that, "The 1996 DEP Sessions" and last year's fantastic "Fused".

BTW, on Ian Gillan's latest solo album, "Gillan's Inn", there is a wonderful version of "Thrashed", which is far better than the one on "Born Again". The whole CD is highly recommended too! Thumbs Up

Thanks, Ghost Rider!! I have the aforementioned "The 1996 DEP Sessions", and it is simply fantastic. I must find "Fused" - unfortunately this was not release here in Brazil...

as far as I am concerned only the Dio period is worth listening to.

Sorry, can´t agree with that, what about albums like Sabotage, Vol 4 etc? I like both eras.

Actually, nevermind, I somehow read the sentence that all good _non-Ozzy_ albums BS recorded were with Dio. So if Sean meant it out of context with the thread, I suppose I should say that I prefer the first 8 albums over the Dio stuff, except TE.
