Now the new Maiden album "a matter of life and death" has been released ; the band received a lot of press attention. In some articles, the band is presented as a prog metal band. I always loved the Maiden albums but I wouldn't describe them as being progressive rock band. What do you think ? |

The band added a little progressive touch to the new album but this is no reason to describe them as a prog metal band.

Well, ever since the first album, with tracks like The Phantom of the Opera and Remember Tomorrow, Iron Maiden clearly dabbles in progressive metal. Take tracks like To Tame a Land, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Alexander the Great, Sea of Madness, the entire 7th Son album, Mother Russia, Afraid to shoot Strangers, Sign of the Cross, The Clansman, Como Esta Amigo, Blood Brothers, Dance of Death, Paschendale, and the entire A Matter of Life and Death album, and you will hear what I mean. Plus, add to that the fact that many progressive metal bands, such as Fates Warning, Queensryche, Dream Theater and many, many, many more have openly claimed to have been influenced by Iron Maiden. They just might have unknowingly created that genre, yet nobody gives them credit for it.

Wow, I think the "iron maiden=prog" threads are gonna be the new DT threads......if they keep it up for another 10 years

Wow, I was thinking about posting a topic on this too. I just got
the album yesterday and was thinking the same thing. I always
thought their newer stuff was a little progressive, but this album is
more so than the others.

Just ask Ghost Rider to give us the links to previous threads about the subject. Even though she agrees on this subject I am sure she might get a little annoyed at so many threads concerning Iron Maiden's inclusion on PA, which seems to be far fetched for a lot of people. Unless it gives the ammo required for such an inclusion?

^ yes ... the more threads, the more likely it is for a band to be included.

Iron Maiden has got various progressive elements, like keyboards, long track, lyrics etc., but still remains as a heavy metal band.
