Nothing existed before DT......The Beatles were really a Petrucci/Portnoy side-project and most of Mozart's stuff was written my Jordan Rudess. Earlier stuff like Vivaldi was written by Derek Sherinian and Kevin Moore invented plainsong.
So,whichever keyboard player Dream Theater had they were the best musicians in the world?
So Sherinian and Rudess were not the best until they joined Dream Theater!
How does that one work?

I'll explain why I give my preference on drums to the late Pierre Moerlen: His specialty is to start with a very simple rhythm, say a basic 4/4. After about 20 bars with occasional fill-ins he adds one constant hit per bar to the 4/4, making it a little more complicated. This goes on for another few bars, until another steady hit is introduced. All the time he adds some fill-ins too, of course. The rhythm get's more and more complicated, until rhythmic patterns and fill-ins become one intricate maze only he finds his way in perfectly. Very good examples for this can be heard in live-versions of "Zero the Hero" (after the space whisper part) or "Isle of Everywhere". Of course the music of Gong with its repetitive riffs helps him create this unique style.

I keep forgetting the man is dead  . For me he lives on in the way he played. I myself feel very much influenced by him in my own style.

about technique...music is more important..so my vote goes to van der
graaf generator.

I gotta say even though I'm a loyal Yes fan, I'd have to go with Gentle Giant. Their stuff is amazing. They make everyone else look like pansies quite frankly. But from the list I'd have to say my favs Yes. ELP is pretty amazing as well but I gotta say Yes.

What do u mean by "best" musician? Steve Vai is an excellnt guitarist,
still he bores me to death. If u mean technically, I wouldn't care
less.. cbut combined with imagination and musical ear, I'd say both

May I ask something?... If Steve Howe is such a good musician, then why his solo albums are a pile of crap?? 
I voted for Saga just because they a very underrated. If Saga weren't on the list I'd vote for Genesis. (Feel free to ask me what do I think of Phil Collins solo albums! )

None that I have bought.. I have listened to his Anthology though and I
know most of his "soundtrack" work.. have seen him on video and on
telly loads of times and I used to have a playlist with some of his
compositions in my old pc. I just don't like his style, he's too much
of a show off for my taste. I do like Satriani though, I find his music
very uplifting, although technically he's not Vai.. I don't want
the man to talk to me while making sounds on his guitae, I don't care
if he can make it burp, after 10 minutes of listening to him I have
this urge of changing the music.
It's just me being weird, nothing personal.. 
What I meant with the above post is that just "best" can't really describe a musician...

That's interesting... I have all Vai studio releases (well, except for Flex-Able which is a bit boring indeed) and am looking for his Alive In An Ultra World. Nuff' said!
At the same time I have only two albums by Satriani (Engines Of Creation and Surfing With The Alien).
Satriani is good, actually he is great, but for some reason these two albums are kinda' "enough of Satriani" to me.

See, that's what I mean.. it's a matter of taste. I got Time Machine
and another one I can't recall (and can't find either for somew
reason..). But most of Satriani's work I have on pc. Now, there is this
other guitarist I simply adore and I just CAN'T recall his name... I've
spent days and nights talking about him, I love his music and all of
the sudden my mind is stuck...and he is very famous... it's like
forgetting your neighbour's name

Nope.. u will laugh at my stupidity once I remember and tell u.. it has to be the heat, it's over 40C here and I'm toasted.
Edit: I remembered! I was thinking about Gary Moore, but it wasn't him, and I was banging my head on the wall...
it's Vinnie Moore!! Now that's one guitar player me likes

I voted KC. Yes don't make it; Steve Howe is NOT the virtuoso he's
acclaimed to be, and he doesn't seem to have noticed it himself,
because he constantly pushes himself to points where he's either not
tight, or he misses the notes. Even on studio albums. I just ADORE his
sound and general style, though! But, Squire plays everything right in
some unison patterns where Howe misses... and he's a bassist. It's
ALWAYS the other way round! Go Squire!!
Wakeman never was a fave of mine either. Good for a rock
keyboardist, average for prog rock. Again, though, he has his sound,
which saves it for him. Alan White never was an appropriate replacement
for Bruford, but I guess that in the 70's, there WERE no appropriate
replacements available for a guy of Bruford's calibre. Possibly palmer
or Peart, but they've got other styles of playing.
So, Crimson with Bruford, that's the killer!
But, of course, Spastic Ink owns everybody else, but they'e contemporary, and that's like cheating.
