 Topic: Frank Zappa how to start

I hardly no anything from Frank zappa. But a lot of people around this forum seem to have him in high esteem. I've downloaded the songs from the archives, but these are mere loose songs. So they seem a bit incoherent. In order to better comprehend/understand his music I think it would be better to listen to an entire album, or something like a good compilation/best of album.
Any recommandations.

Depends on what other music you like, but the YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS album is song orientated and a good place to start.

I'm very much into the neo-prog sound.
This includes Genesis (Gabriel), Marillion, Arena, Pendragon, Camel, Kansas
Most of it are the more easaly accesible melody based bands.
I also like (some) Jethro tull, all Yes, most Rush. Pink Floyd (not all). Actualy everything really.
So I hope this helps in advising me on which album I should give a listen.

Agree with Velvetclown. YAWYI is a good place to start. Strictly Commercial is a decent compilation CD, if that is what you want to try first. Something like Roxy And Elsewhere and Stage 2 (Helsinki Concert) are brilliant if you want to hear more 'prog' like music. Enjoy.

The Live Album. The one recorded in New York, on december 1978. To me is a good first approach to Zappa. As a second choice, I suggest Bongo Fury.

"Wakajawaka" and "the gran wazoo" are the two best, instrumentally speaking, the best of the jazz rock period (1972).
I do love "burnt weeeny sandwich" (1970)for the wonderful guitars solos, and the mix of 50's parody with comtemporary influences. Unique!

I personally like Zappa when hes Strickly
Commercial and get bored with endless jams and
avant everywhere, but I like to relax and snicker as
opposed to wind up and spin out!
I would recommend
Overnite Sensations
Apostrophe
Hot Rats
Grand Wazoo
You Are What You is
One Size Fits All
Uncle Meat and Joes Garage have good highpoints
but awful long, Ship Arriving to Late....too short.

I'd go for Sheik Yerbouti, which was my first Zappa purchase, because it's got studio trickery, prog wizardry, some great FZ guitar moments (especially Yo'Mama), and lots of words even ruder than bottom.*
*Yes Reed, I know I nicked that line from the Macc Lads.

Quite a lot of albums i'm supposed to get listening. i'll try to make a decent choise for a start.
