I know many don't think ELO as prog,which album do you think is their best?The Roy Wood era is is probably more prog, but many songs leave me cold. On The Third Day, gives a passing nod to post Wood and a clear indication Jeff Lyne is the boss. Eldorado, is a favourite of mine, as is Face the Music. Who used to play Fire on High backwards, on their turntables, to hear the secret message? A new World Rcord seems to be aimed at an American audience, excellent all the same, and Out Of The Blue is their best selling album to date, but long past their prog roots, and Discover was a disco album that made mega bucks. Time pulled things around, but by then the band ahd started to pull in different directions and Lynne was by now a morethan proficient producer, hence the Travelling Willbouries (sorry for the spelling).

ELO is not Prog Related... simply a member of a subgenre not ...as of
yet recognized here yet.. prog pop. Prog
instrumnetation and classical influences... experimentive nature...
.all within the context of well written pop songs (HEAVY Beatles
influence in songwriting) And their first 3 or 4 album were FULL
ON prog ... listen to them people. PR my backside

STYX: Prog-Related KANSAS: Hillbilly-Prog Doesnt matter what you think of the categorisation,as long as they are categorized as Prog-Related then any posts directly relating to ELO must go in the "Proto-Prog and Prog-Related Lounge"

ELO 2 and On The Third Day are definitely the most interesting musically and definitely progressive in my opinion; but anything up to Out of the Blue is good stuff. I don't mind Discovery and Time as I grew up with them but the stuff after that wasn't even good pop music. Jeff Lynne definitely did some good stuff with the Willburys 'though and the album that he released a year or two back under the ELO name, Zoom, showed some hints of the old stuff.
All in all Jeff and ELO influenced a lot of people. I remember trying to convince a friend (hiding somewhere on this forum) that Grandaddy were obviously ELO fans and he refused to believe me; until he read an interview where they named Jeff Lynne as one of their idols.

There's nothing wrong with having eclectic tastes. You forgot about the Wombles albums in the loft. At least I can honestly say that I don't own a PALLAS album.

ELO is sooooooo ART ROCK its interesting to see them not listed that way. Anyway ELDORADO is a classic. The new remaster has 2 interesting bonus tracks added to the concept that only adds to its legacy! 
Jeff Lynne was a genius for putting together ELO and a genius for going commercial when the feds started harassing the hippy artists!  |

It's quite clear from their latest release. The end of the CD has a hidden track that is a cover of the outro on ELO's "Shangri-La." I think the stuff Grandaddy is doing is some of the freshest stuff I've heard in years. Admittedly with an ELO influence, but quite a twist.

Their "best album" is "A NEW WORLD FECORD", followed by "OUT OF THE BLUE". If you prefer the latter you are accepted as a connaisseur as well !

Actually, it's hard to say which one of those I listen to more, but "A New World Record" is the superior album. Trying to fill a double album proved to be a more arduous task for them. It's a bit uneven.

From the debut to Time I like all their lbum, some more than others. Event their half side in Xanadu is fine. It seems to me that the movement towards disco initiated in Out of the Blue was finished with Time, a wonderful synth pop-rock concept album.
My favs are On the third Day, Eldorado, the wonderful A New World record and, in a lesser degree, Ou of the Blue. The last could be a classic if some filler were cutted and the album was a single one. Even Discovery has its moments. ELO is a wonderful pop-prog band, and art rock fits its variety of stiles along the years.
