Topic: Which prog tracks intro would Posted: January 12 2005 at 10:59 |
most immediately identify that track as progessive - thus beckoning the progophile to listen with renewed interest and immediately alienating a poppophile - This is assuming that the listener did not play the music - thus doesn't know what it is !
You can all make the assumption, that whatever the piece of music - it is new to the listener

No question: Return of the Giant Hogweed. I've never heard a more immediate sense of "prog."
Peace.

This one will run and run - my vote would go to 'Opening Move' from Gryphon's Red Queen to Gryphon 3.
From the official list of prog classics, In The Court Of The Crimson King is pretty much an archetypical prog intro, as is Close to the Edge.

Heart of The Sunrise - Yes.
I doubt you'd ever confuse it with a Heavy Metal track.

Almost any Hawkwind track from Space Ritual
'10 seconds of forever' 'sonic attack' 'welcome to the future' and 'lord of the light' and 'earth calling' any of their's that have Calvert and his space poetry introductions.

'Mumps' - Hatfield & The North - would have any poppophile (lovely word - if it's not in the dictionary, it should be) running for cover

we have to consider the subgenres here:
here are a few:
Folk prog: Cross Eyed Mary by Jethro Tull
Symphonic: The Gates of Delirium by Yes
Space/ psychedelic: Shine on You Crazy Diamond Pink Floyd
Art Rock: Salsbury Hill Peter Gabriel or Dust in The Wind by Kansas
Neo prog: Anything that sounds like these but lame.

Personally the Eruption section (I suppose you could call it an intro) of ELP's "Tarkus" just screams that this isn't just an ordinary song.

ok, a song that would immediately identify an album as prog would be any Magma song.
A song that would immediately alienate/hospitalize a popophile (In a good way) would be any Magma song, any Captain Beefheart song
