Robert Wyatt's idiosyncratic drumming was to be heard as Soft Machine evolved from a psychedelic to one of earliest European jazz rock bands - some times said to be a cross of Ringo Starr and Elvin Jones's playing!

I love Bruford, but as far as fusion goes, Billy Cobham has the greatest style.

Mm... Can't believe I forgot Tony Williams and Dennis Chambers... As for that guy that said Phil Collins has nothing on Cobham Gadd or Weckl... I agree... Nonetheless, I prefer Collins over Weckl... even though I voted for Gadd... He's the best. Collins is still a brilliant drummer though... Listen to Unorthodox Behavior and Moroccan Roll before you judge him. |

Cobham gets it by a hair, though I prefer Bruford as a drummer, Billy is ferocious on his kit.

Ooo, Lenny White or Billy Cobham...
Cobham is a beast, but White is so fun and has a lot going at once. I'd have to say White because he's falling behind. |

Sasquamo, are you a drummer? I'm asking, because it is said that only drummers like Weckl. Not that I believe this (if only because I'm no drummer and I like Weckl's playing), but I'm just curious.

Now that would surprise me. At least as far as BB is concerned. Which albums do you recommend that Weckl plays on? |

Haha, Bill Bruford and Phil Collins! They have nothing on Cobham, Gadd, and especially Weckl. I vote for Weckl. He's amazing.

Yeah, I can't vote for just one. You are SO right about Bruford (who, because of his vast abilities in prog and jazz-rock, would probably have to be first), Cobham (spectacular), Collins (definitely right! - his playing on 'Moroccan Roll'...), Gadd (all his playing with Al DiMeola and that appearance on the Steely Dan title for Aja - wow!). I would have to add Bobby Columby from BS&T (especially that first 1968 album!), and William Kennedy with Yellowjackets. Thanks for the head's up about Valihora - will have to check out the youtube uploads!

Steve Gadd without a doubt. Such a brilliant drummer, subtly perfect in nearly every way.

When someone says jazz fusion...I think Billy Cobham. I love hos work ith early Mahavishnu, and have just got hold of his (1st?) solo album, "Spectrum". Brilliant.
