Who is your favorite Jazz Fusion drummer?
Bruford and Cobham are equally amazing...
I love Collins' work in Brand X even more though. I think he is terribly underrated. He dosen't shine in Genesis the way he does in Brand X. Collins is truely a spectacular drummer.
But with all due respect... It's gotta be Steve God... I mean Gadd.... he conquers all... I vote for him
Also, I recommend you guys listen to Martin Valihora, Hiromi Uehara's Drummer. VERY talented young drummer. Check out Hirmoi's stuff on youtube, if you dont own her CDs...... Magnificent drumming...

I've heard that Cobham did some impressive things, but I'm not familiar with his work. Steve Gadd is definitely a master (I love Steely Dan's AJA) but I've also heard him play some terrible fusion-lite. Phil Collins is much underrated; I love the stuff he did with Brand X. But of all the fusion drummers you mention Bill Bruford seems by far the most talented. He's the only prog (and fusion) drummer who has never done anything tasteless or cheap, except perhaps working with AWBH, and subsequently on Yes's UNION - two collaborations he justified, by the way, by pointing out that the money allowed him to record with Earthworks! His Yes stuff, his Crimso stuff, his 'Bruford' stuff, his Earthworks stuff... Has any other fusion drummer been so inventive?

TheLamb - Some extremely important drummers you forgot about - Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers and Virgil Donati. Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny's drummer) also deserves a mention, IMO fusiony enough.
Some less known recommendations:
Chad Wackerman (Zappa, Holdsworth)
Keith Carlock (Wayne Krantz)
Kofi Baker (the son of Ginger Baker, plays in Chris Poland's OHM)
Billy Kilson (more jazz than fusion, but fits the others well enough, plays with Dave Holland)

When someone says jazz fusion...I think Billy Cobham. I love hos work ith early Mahavishnu, and have just got hold of his (1st?) solo album, "Spectrum". Brilliant.

Steve Gadd without a doubt. Such a brilliant drummer, subtly perfect in nearly every way.

Yeah, I can't vote for just one. You are SO right about Bruford (who, because of his vast abilities in prog and jazz-rock, would probably have to be first), Cobham (spectacular), Collins (definitely right! - his playing on 'Moroccan Roll'...), Gadd (all his playing with Al DiMeola and that appearance on the Steely Dan title for Aja - wow!). I would have to add Bobby Columby from BS&T (especially that first 1968 album!), and William Kennedy with Yellowjackets. Thanks for the head's up about Valihora - will have to check out the youtube uploads!

Haha, Bill Bruford and Phil Collins! They have nothing on Cobham, Gadd, and especially Weckl. I vote for Weckl. He's amazing.

Now that would surprise me. At least as far as BB is concerned. Which albums do you recommend that Weckl plays on? |

Sasquamo, are you a drummer? I'm asking, because it is said that only drummers like Weckl. Not that I believe this (if only because I'm no drummer and I like Weckl's playing), but I'm just curious.

Ooo, Lenny White or Billy Cobham...
Cobham is a beast, but White is so fun and has a lot going at once. I'd have to say White because he's falling behind. |

Cobham gets it by a hair, though I prefer Bruford as a drummer, Billy is ferocious on his kit.

Mm... Can't believe I forgot Tony Williams and Dennis Chambers... As for that guy that said Phil Collins has nothing on Cobham Gadd or Weckl... I agree... Nonetheless, I prefer Collins over Weckl... even though I voted for Gadd... He's the best. Collins is still a brilliant drummer though... Listen to Unorthodox Behavior and Moroccan Roll before you judge him. |
