I don´t agree with that list. It´s just a "most popular" list... where are prog solos? Just because Zeppelin is worshipped like the Second Coming doesn´t mean their solos were so great. Where are Petrucci´s solos? Genesis solos? Another solo that is outstanding but in a completely different genre (one I don´t like that much, but that solo is AMAZING) is Darrell´s solo in "Floods" in Pantera´s The Great Southern Trendkill.
Awful List. Slash and Page-worshipping list.

That list is absurd except for a few there like 'Numb', though almost any Dave Gilmour solo is gold, and Page was a great (if intentionally sloppy) craftsman. The thing is, your perspective changes the more lead work you hear. Most solos that people remember and like are the carefully constructed ones (ala 'Stairway') rather than the continual flow of Hendrix live or Holdsworth. 'All Along the Watchtower'? Gimme a break, howabout 'Machine Gun'. For studio work I would probably give it to Gilmour for anything on Meddle or the Wall. Also, anything Randy Rhoads touched during his short span with Ozzy (not Quiet Riot), Uli Roth for his solo records, and most of Eddie's work on the Fair Warning album is genius.

I agree with number 1 that's about it. Though all the solos there are great, they are not in the top 20. Songs that deserve top 20:
Cortez the Killer (Neil Young)
Floods (Pantera)
Mr. Crowley (Ozzy Osbourne)
Rock Bottom (UFO)
Sails of Charon (Scorpions)

I'm not completely sure if it's meant as a solo, but anyway, Matt Bellamy's solo in the Muse song Hysteria captures the desperate mood of the lyrics so incredibly well.

| For solos? I've never really found Hammett's lead very interesting, though he is an excellent all-around rhythm/lead player.

Rothery's solo on "Easter" is still one of the best that I've ever heard. Just pure emotion. E

Where's "Layla"? Clapton and Duane Allmann were amazing on that one. "Hotel California" is a great solo; but, Felder's solo on "One Of These Nights" is pure magic. Maybe he should join a prog band. I bet he wouldn't get two-faced like he did by Henley and Frey. I can't even begin to listen to the Eagles without Felder. Completely underrated. E

Aye, that's a good one. As long as we're on the topic of Rothery solos...

For me the greatest single guitar solo I have ever heard is the live version of "Astronomy" by Blue Oyster Cult from Some Enchanted Evening. Buck Dharma had his mojo going that night! The solo evolves from a slow soulful sound into a raging beast.... I stop everything and listen every time it comes on.

The solo on Steely Dan's Kid Charlamagne is my favorite.
I think it Denny Dias.
