How about Hacket's solo on 'Firth Of Fifth' then? Any version you like, really, SEBTP, Seconds Out or my personal favorite from the Archives Vol I box set. No mention of Zappa?  What about 'The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution', 'Sexual Harrassment In The Workplace', 'Watermelon In Easter Hay' etc etc etc? Also, an honourable mention to everybody's favorite vegetarian feminist, Ted Nugent - 'Hibernation' or 'Stranglehold' come to mind.

A ton of stuff by BOC has jaw-dropping solos - a favorite of mine was "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" off Extraterrestrial Live.
I saw BOC one time in the late 70's, and they did a version of "Then Came The Last Days of May". Buck told a story before the song that it was the anniversary of the day that his friend in the song died. He dedicated the song to him. He then played the song with a slow, emotional solo that must have lasted 10 minutes! He is one of the best to ever pick up a Gibson!

That whole album is just stuffed with great guitar solos, mainly by Larry Carlton. The one on Kid Charlemagne is Carlton btw not Denny Dias.

I remember a solo on MSG's Assault Attack on a song called "Dancer" as being out of this world. I had the LP as a kid, but might have to find it somewhere on disc. Good disc. Like to have seen Bonnett with them a bit more.

That whole album is just stuffed with great guitar solos, mainly by Larry Carlton. The one on Kid Charlemagne is Carlton btw not Denny Dias.

Where's "Layla"? Clapton and Duane Allmann were amazing on that one.
"Hotel California" is a great solo; but, Felder's solo on "One Of These Nights" is pure magic. Maybe he should join a prog band. I bet he wouldn't get two-faced like he did by Henley and Frey. I can't even begin to listen to the Eagles without Felder. Completely underrated.

For solos? I've never really found Hammett's lead very interesting, though he is an excellent all-around rhythm/lead player.

I'm not completely sure if it's meant as a solo, but anyway, Matt Bellamy's solo in the Muse song Hysteria captures the desperate mood of the lyrics so incredibly well.

I agree with number 1 that's about it. Though all the solos there are great, they are not in the top 20. Songs that deserve top 20:
