Yup that's the band name alright, but if you are looking for pure psychedelia I would skip it. John Cipolina is an excellent guitarist, but thats pretty much what it is, just blues rock.

Don't get me wrong, I like 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men' as a piece of schlock psych. There were clones of that song Quo recorded after the success of 'Pictures...' like 'Technicolour Dreams', 'Black Veils Of Melancholy' and 'Paradise Lost' which were all duff and they all suitably bombed, selling nothing. Quo's heart was obviously not in it as they later, as you say, veered to a blues rock/boogie sound which I much preferred from them.

There was a UK cover of 'Hot Smoke and Sassafras' by a band called The Mooche- a great track, as was the B side to that called 'Seen Through A Light'. There's another excellent UK psych compilation called 'Hot Smoke and Sassafras' which features a lot of excellent psych pop material from the Pye Records archive.

'Sunshine Superman' is my fave Donovan album, actually. I think it showed him starting to really think outside the box and go beyond the folk route he'd taken (which led some to call him a Dylan clone).

I don't think anyone has mentioned "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan. It's a great album. Perhaps it's not as psychdelic as The Byrds, but definitely the most psychedelic Donovan album. Plus Jimmy Page guests on guitar and Jone Paul Jones also did session work for Donovan.
Something you might be able to find in a cheap bin, a compilation of the Strawberry Alarm Clock. They're not very good except for a couple classic tunes, "Incense and Peppermints" and "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" are both awesome.
Unfortunately some compilations may be necessary. "Pictures of Matchstickmen" is absolutely essential psychedelia in my humble opinion. But the band who recorded it, Status Quo, isn't actually psychedelic. They're more of a blues rock band. Also good luck finding an album by Bubble Puppy, but their tune "Hot Smoke and  Sassafrass" is also essential. If you decide on some compilations the Psychedelic Mind Trip Volumes 1 and 2 are both very good. They're put out by K-Tel.

^ I think they did do, but they would be unavailable now as See For Miles seem to have gone out of business. Tracks from those bands seem to be all available on those 'Scene' compilations Deram did a few years ago which I think were reissued last year and should be easy to get- eg; the Psychedelic Scene, the Freakbeat Scene etc. I need to get some of those myself, actually.

[QUOTE=salmacis]

That list was published in a later issue of Mojo again around 1997 or so, I think- I have that issue and I'm certain that list is in there.

[QUOTE]

Sal,you're right about the republishing of Savage's  list of psychedelia but alas not in a illustrated booklet as the original version was. BTW Jon Savage wrote the readable, definite history of the British punk movement England's Dreaming.
The earliest British psychedelia compilations in my collection are on vinyl, released in 1986 by See For Miles Records: The British Psychedelic Trip 1966-1969 and The British Psychedelic Trip 1966-1969 Volume 2 , which have a few of obvious tracks (e.g. Kites, My White Bicycle), and lots of less common examples of the genre (e.g. Davey Jones aka Davie Bowie, July, Lemon Tree, Turquoise, The Attack, 23rd Turnoff, Virgin Sleep, The Fire, The Accent). Did these two LPs ever make it on to CD?
The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS.

I know nothing about the album... but I just picked up Metamorphosis by Iron Butterfly for a buck on vinyl.  Never heard it before but I couldn't pass it up for a buck.  Figured it'd be something to expand my psyche collection.  Thoughts on this album?

There were three Nuggets box sets. The first was the American garage/psych acts, the second was the British psych acts (despite it claiming it was 'virtually hitless', bands like Them, The Pretty Things, The Small Faces and The Yardbirds were featured...) and the third was 80s psychedelia (I bet that one sold a fair bit less...). There was also a box set released by Mojo of UK psych, with a title that escapes me. But if you're on a budget, these are ruled out.

To be honest, though I love one track by most of the American garage/psych bands, I don't think too many of those 'Nuggets' acts had much more than one song to offer, and endlessly rehashed it over their albums and even most of those relied rather heavily on The Yardbirds and the early Rolling Stones tracks.

That list was published in a later issue of Mojo again around 1997 or so, I think- I have that issue and I'm certain that list is in there. The British one tends to be quite predictable in some cases, imo- there are lots of singles that are much more heavily revered amongst psych enthusiasts than say, the ersatz 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men', despite their obscurity. I heavily recommend the slightly dubious compilation 'The Perfumed Garden' (the title taken from John Peel's show) which is pretty much a precis of wonderful, hugely obscure 60s psych pop from the UK. If you're into Syd era Floyd, I recommend Kaleidoscope's 'Tangerine Dream', and if you're into 'Oddysey and Oracle' by The Zombies (a personal favourite of mine) check out the originally massively rare Billy Nicholls album 'Would You Believe' now available on a Sanctuary, deluxe 2cd set. Kind of like a Swinging London counterpart to 'Pet Sounds', IMO.

However, that American Mojo list I find hard to find fault with, really. Partly because I find a lot of the more garage/psych acts did like one good track IMO, as I said.

Soft Machine first album, and check out Soft Machine's Middle Earth Masters (issued three months ago by Cuneiform) for a sense of live London-based  psychedelia (warts & all). Just reminded myself, when an identical thread was published some time ago, I listed the 100 tracks nominated by rock writer Jon Savage in a nice little booklet as a give away for the first or second edition of Mojo magazine, therefore check out:

Beware the full Nuggets box set has more pre-psychedelia garage than psychedelia, so go for The Nuggets compilation:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nuggets-Original-Artyfacts-Psychedelic-1965-1968/dp/B000E6ET1G/sr=1-1/qid=1167580416/ref=sr_1_1/202-3375390-0374218?ie=UTF8&s=music

However, this set appears to have an American bias. Two triple sets issued in 1992 in the UK give a broader overview - if you can find them:
The Psychedelic Years 1966-69 (Sequel NXT CD 221)
The Psychedelic Years Revisited 1966-69 (Sequel NXT CD 222)
It looks like these recordings were licensed from Knight Records (in the US???) who issued them in 1990.

Picked up Steve Miller Band's Children of the Future on a lark (mainly cause it was dirt cheap at the used shop) and was highly impressed....a much better blues-psych mix than, say, the Electric Flag.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

To add to freekske's list I would also say:

13th Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
The Mothers Of Invention - We're Only In It For The Money
Pink Floyd - Relics (It's a compilation though...)
Oingo Boingo - Boingo (Tee-hee)
The Zombies - Begin Here
