If you listen carefully on headphones to the track "Child In Time" on the album "Come Hell Or High Water" you can hear a backup recording of Ian Gillan from ´72! He is actually singing over this old recording!
Has anyone else heard this?

No, but I'm not surprised by this at all. I had the DVD of that one and I must say, it was disappointing, 'Child In Time' blighted by Gillan's inability to hit the really high notes but then you'd expect that the ravages of time had worn his vocal chords. About the only memorable thing on the DVD was Blackmore's tantrum throwing water into a camera.

No, I didn't realise of that, and I'd be surprised if it was true. Sure I'll give it a spin soon and listen carefully.

I would say three things about this one :

1. I would be very surprised if it's true

2. I do not really care if it is true

3. I have just discussed with my brother about "Child" and I told him that I would really like to attend a Purple concert during which they would play it again, with the help of tapes for the "unhuman" parts of it.
For your information, I did see the Purple in March 1973 (I was 14) and, yes, they did play it (since it was the same tracklist as for "Made In Japan".

The last time I saw them was January last year, and I am thrilled to see them again in May 2007.
I doubt they will take my suggestion for granted, but I would love them to do so.

Cheers.

ZowieZiggy, I would have loved to see Purple in their prime, you´re really a lucky man!
I have the DVD 72/73 and Gillan really hits all those high notes with ease.

I actually have read somewhere an interview with Ritchie Blackmore saying that Gillan used to sing backed with recordings for the high notes he didn't reach on their late years.
