Topic: Hurdy Gurdy Posted: January 24 2007 at 16:41 |
Hey what about this band from Denmark??
Hurdy Gurdy (71)
Hurdy Gurdy were a guitar/bass/drums trio from Denmark who released one album in 1971. The guitar player was the excellent Claus Bohling before he went on to Burnin' Red Ivanhoe and the excellent Secret Oyster. With English vocals, Hurdy Gurdy recall to mind many early '70s bands such as Humble Pie, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience or Jimi's Band of Gypsys and so forth. Fans of the early British scene would probably go a bundle for this. Bohling is an excellent guitar player who can set up quite a jam. One of the eight songs is instrumental while all the others have vocals to varying degrees. There's also a little bit of sitar (with tabla!) for the occasional psychedelic sound and, of course, the standard blues harmonica. Great air guitar material!

Sound likely candidates for Art Rock... Any chances of getting some samples to listen to?

I have the album, and as far as I remember, it wasn't particularly proggy. It's been a year or two since I last listened to it though.

I'm not sure how progressive this can be considered.
maybe comparible with May Blitz to some extend, and arguable prog-related, but basically it's a slightly psychedelic 'guitar driven heavy rock / classic rock band.
It's just 1 album, so no damage if added, but to legitimise this as progressive rock would go beyond my comprehension of the genre. But the album as i remember it is very good indeed.

A band that "recall to mind many early '70s bands such as Humble Pie, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience or Jimi's Band of Gypsys" doesn't sound very prog to me!

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

Quote from "Scented gardens of the mind":
"This one ranks among the top 10 Danish albums and comprised blues and jazz influenced heavy progressive rock with strong melodies and competent vocals. The trio had obviously heard the first albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, but also added an Eastern track with tablas and sitar."

I listened to the album, which is quite good, though I'm not really sure about its prog quotient. The sitar-driven track was the proggiest on the album, in my opinion. I'm sure they would fit into Prog-Related quite easily, but I'm not equally convinced about Art Rock. They would've been an excellent to that Heavy Prog category, if that had been implemented.

Well, thanks , if that is the case... i`d like you admins to consider the inclusion of Hurdy Gurdy for Prog Related.
