come on fellas, everyone needs alittle Axis and Akritas!, this is the most overlooked scene in the archives. due to the political scene back then it was pretty underground and many of the recordings are not remastered or even been released on CD. but dont think that some of the output was not top notch.

I'll go with you on those two and add PLJ Band - Armageddon, though I find it less good than those two.
There's also Four Levels Of Existence-s/t, though it's not mindblowing or anything.

Akritas is amazing, Vangelis and Aphrodite's Child are OK, and do not know Axis yet.
Very overlooked scene indeed.

Here are some suggestion on Greek progressive music.
1. A great greek progressive band was "Iraklis". Their double album "Se allous kosmous" (1975) is in my opinion a masterpiece. Iraklis was not really a band but the work of Iraklis Triantafyllidis and a great number of great Greek musicians. Many influences of greek music on this record, great bass work but also greek lyrics which might discourage some. I think it is also released on single cd but some tracks have been left out.
2. If you are looking for truly original greek/balkan progressive (in the wider sence) check out Dionysis Savopoulos' songs "Mavri Thalassa" and "Ballos" (on his records "Bromiko Psomi" and "Ballos" respectively). He is mostly a singer/songwriter but his very original arrangements in those two songs which run for about 10 min. are very close to what i call progressive. Great but Greek lyrics
3. Kostas Tournas released "Aperanta Horafia" in 1972. A great record of progressive folk/rock (a bit of Strawbs and Jethro Tull in their folkish moments). Two songs (part 1 & 2) each covering one side of the LP. Greek lyrics.
4. Will o' the Wisp released two excellent albums of a very melodic progressive rock "Will o' the Wisp" 1998 and "Second Sight" 2000. I believe they have released two more but i haven't heard them yet.
5. Mariza Koch released an album called "Arabas" in 1971 which succeded very well in mixing traditional greek songs with rock arrangements. Great musicians and Koch has a strange but very beautiful voice. However it might be difficult for a non- Greek to appreciate.
6.Purple Overdose is a very succesful Greek band and i strongly suggest "Reborn" and "Salmon's Trip" though they might be more psychedelic than progressive.
7. Apocalypsis made two records "Apocalypsis" in 1980 and "No" in 1981. I haven't heard the self-titled. It is rather hard to find although it is the best of the two. "No" is a more than decent commercial prog reminding me of Marillion. In this record they use synthesizers a lot - after all it was the 80s! English lyrics but with distinct greek accent!
Those records might not be the best Greek progressive rock albums. Some might not even be rock music in the classic sence. Just some suggestions on albums you should listen to if you have the chance.

Now that I finally got Akritas; Wow! great band. I have no idea why you like them though, Dallas. This is hyperactive, complex, disharmonic and dark stuff. Would you still like them if they were french or british? |

yes for its melodic sense, the differences i have are basically some euro bands lack a groove! native american indian blood imparts a bit of earthly tribal rhythm to your soul. some euro avant/fusion and dark freeform minimalism is too white for my tastes.
the greeks still have structure here.
hertitage......
50% english
25% french
12.5% austrian
12.5% native american
we are not far apart, i simply lean to the left where you may prefer a little more to the right. at least we found the ballpark! Edited by DallasBryan - May 09 2007 at 10:53 |

I get it, but I quess just like me, you shout a little extra when bands that deserves some, gets no attention at all.
Can you believe this schizophrenic, little prog-masterpiece is still not in the archives? According to what you write you must have given up your pet hate Zeuhl/Magma too quickly. Magma's debut is groovy as hell, and have you heard Eider Stellaire's 1st? I guarantee you, they've got more groove, melody & earthy tribal rhytms than Akritas (& Spacecraft, Edgar Froese)! And how does that Dün fivestar fit in to all this? Potemkine, Vortex and especially Rahmann should be no problem for your native american indian blood imparts either...if Dün's funky enough for them. |

Dallas, I was amazed you included Poulikakos on your list. Can you understand the lyrics somehow?
Poulikakos wrote some excellent songs influenced by Zappa mostly. He even covered one of his songs. Have you heard his work with Eksadaktylos? He is one of my favorite artists not only for his music but also for his other artistic activities, his personality and his lifestyle.

i have a friend from Greece that explained to be basically what is being said. i was in greece in the 80's and picked up some myself. i find his work to be some of the best euro language music i have encountered, though i often speak of not caring for lenghty foreign language exchanges on recordings. i have still heard all the classics i just simply often dont choose them for listening. besides the music on Poulikakos album is wonderful. Eksadaktylos? yes but it has been many years back.

If you feel adventurous sometime try to find "Iraklis" as i mentioned in my previous post. Greek lyrics is a disadvantage but i believe the music will not let you down.

I only have 3 Aphrodite's Child albums, I love the unique sound though. I'll have to start looking for some of these.
