I feel that most classic albums open with a mini-epic such as the Musical Box, and that's how they should open. What do you think?

I agree totally.
Although many things work..the mini epic is really nice!

I like albums to open with a short-ish instrumental as an overture of sorts. Doesn't have to be fast (in fact its better if its not), so I voted other.,

Mini Epic and slow medium intro work best.

I think the best opening mini epic has to be Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, which happens to start off slowly and softly. The combination of these 2 styles seems to be highly effective

It doesn't matter to me, so long as the music's good.

How ridiculous to think that there's just one good way to open an album......

Any way the artist wants to start it out.

Why wouldn't it range from album to album?

Obviously, there's no importance at all in how the album begins.

The problem really is not how it starts... but how you feel about the album when it ends... so I don't care how it starts as long as what lies after that beginning is great. Too many albums start great and go the downhill path...

true, but there're some people who seek for a good first impression. so the album starter is quite important actually, but then, every part in an album is important i think

and i don't think that there should be a typical opening for all album. what i mean is, don't you want a variation on each album ?

Well, that's the style that worked for Gabriel Genesis and in General for every Prog Genesis album except ATOTT:

1.- Trespass: Looking for Someone (7:06)
2.- Nursery Cryme: The Musical Box (10:24)
3.- Foxtrot: Watcher of the Skies (7.19)
4.- SEBTP: Dancing with the Moonlit Knight (8:01)
5.- The Lamb: The Lamb (4:50)
6.- ATOTT: Dance on a Volcano (5:53)
7.- W&W: Eleventh Earl of Mar (7:41)

This doesn't mean all bands had to work like this, Genesis was more structured in this aspect, thet used to set the things and the atmosphere in the first track, except in ATOTT where the opener is darker than the rest of the album and the closer to Gabriel era.

I think a good instrumental piece would be good, not an instrumental song - but that can be good as well. I think the mini-epic should be further into the album like song 3  or 4.

tried and tested formula....mini epic at the start and 25-30 minute epic at the end. Seriously though, it doesn't matter in the least how an album starts as long as it contains that obligatory loooong epic somewhere!!!Clown

In my experience, classic albums begin either with a short piece played on a kalimba (marimba?) or with these words: Out of town, my work takes me out of town... ;)

A slowly groweing (and not too long) piece developing a main thing is the way some of my favourite albums. I think that fits option no.4 .

I don't think it matters as long as it is a good start.

I voted other...

something memorable... look to our friends in RPI for tons of examples

the haunting vocals of YS

the melotron of Per Un Amico

the choral vocals of L'Islola di Niente

the street sounds of Naples of Palepoli

and so on and so on...
