Back in the 60's, there was a rock group called Coven who had a huge hit that was also the theme for the movie "Billy Jack".  It was called "One Tin Soldier".  Most of the songs on their albums had the words "devil" or "demons" or "witches" in the titles.  More info can be found on the All Music website, a handy tool for reviews and information.

These two quotes are taken from Amazon reviews, by someone old enough to remember how it used to be:

'Coven were the first overtly Occult/Pagan/Satanic band in America, from a time when the lines separating Wicca and Satanism weren't as clearly drawn as they are today.'

'I discovered Wicca in '68 and Coven in '69 and unlike a previous reviewer thinks, I so liked this album, especially Jinx' vocals. And I do not feel I compromised my belief in Wicca by admiring this album.'

This is Coven: Blood on the Snow. One of the first videos ever made. I've got the album with the same name, but I haven't got their notorious debut Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls.

I heard the entire satanic mass from the WFMU blog, though.

What about "heathen"?

"Among non-Pagans, the term 'heathen' just means anyone who is non-Christian. But Pagans use the term to refer specifically to those who follow a Norse or Germanic path."

I don't know. I think I'll stick to throwing all these terms together, like I've started with. I'm not going to pretend I know a whole lot about about the modern, wiccan way of thinking, but there has defenatly been plenty of artists around making an unholy cocktail of what I look for. They were probably getting it all wrong, as well. Atleast from a 2007 point of view.

My favorite positively jolly Pagan-oriented band: Comus. Nothing dark or evil about them!

Wacko

Those who follow a Norse or Germanic path are unfortunately extreme right-wingers often. They wear the swastika not only as a magical symbol.

yes ... which is a pity, because these symbols did not have a political meaning at all until they were abused by the nazis.

You'd certainly want the OST to The WIcker Man (original version not the damn remake!).  And if you haven't seen the film, it's a classic.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

Yeah! The original Wicker Man is one of my top five favorite movies, and the soundtrack is fantastic!

The remake looks like a real turkey. Except for the masks, what does these stupid clips got to do with the original? Its just a confused Nicolas Cage running around beating up women! Wicker Man Remake highlights.

The Vortex album (I guess we all know it thanks to Yukorin) and everything else Phileas mentions, are all relavant and highly reccomended.

I'm sure it's a stinker...either way, it's not a film I'll ever watch, there is just no point in remaking something that was perfectly achieved the first time.

I did get a laugh out of Nicolas Cage pulling a gun on a teenage girl...to steal her bicycle???

The pictures of Aleister Crowley which Philippe posted reminded me of a novel I highly recommend, "Masks of the Illuminati" by Robert Anton Wilson, in which Albert Einstein and James Joyce solve a mysterious series of seemingly induced suicides. Aleister Crowley has a major part in that novel.

Well I know the difference and I'm a hardcore Christian. I went to school with a wiccan, she tried explaining it to me but I really don't remember many specifics.

Thanks for the nice pics Philippe. I'm no specialist, but there's an undeniable mystical,  occult and often dark side to many albums of the early german progressive scene. from the first albums of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, As Ra Tempel, to tons of the lesser known bands including Annexus Quam, Mythos, Limbus 3&4, Golem etc...

Am I confusing trippy dope tracks with ritualistic music, or is it more or less the same thing?

This '72 album, released in '05 album. Third Ear Band: The Magus
Is like their instrumental albums a sinister, mystical eastern/medieval-sounding trip. But on this tarot based concept album, all the tracks are sung. Its really good and uniquesounding. At times quite similar to 80's Dead Can Dance when vocals are handled by Brendan Perry.
