Believe me that most of us don't really understand what they're talking about either.

ok, but there is no place for a translated lyrics?  some website?

no but maybe one of our french speaking posters will create that website

Except for Dixie, all of them are excellent. I went for Automne.
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I do understand the lyrics and the whole thing is beautiful.

Here is a website that explains the concept :

I honestly can't choose. I'll go with Vert because I think it has less votes than it deserves

I just translated the songs of "Si On Avait Besoin d'une 5ième Saison". I tried to do my best, but there could be some errors. There are some sentences that are difficult to understand because there're figurative and there are some play on words that simply don't exist in English. Anyway, the meaning of the translated sentences is near to the original signification. Thought it would gives an idea to those who wanted to understand the Harmonium lyrics. Smile

Si On Avait Besoin d’une 5ième Saison

Vert

Avant d'me rendre
faut que j'm'invente d'autres couleurs
C'est comme si j'avais peur
De me retrouver ailleurs

T'oublier toute une année
Une année pour t'oublier
Même la folie perd la raison
Mais j'ai l'goût d'me rattrapper
Débouler, débouler...
De me retrouver dans le mélange

Green

Green, yellow, and red, and blue

I’ve the sun in the eyes

Before to say your farewells to us

I don’t know wich one of both of us

Will look-down

I just started to fall

Before to go he will show his colors

Like he would have been afraid

He left to turn red somewhere else

Gray around, and black far away

The forest meets me

Similarly as a magic act

Forest holds me

I just starded to fall

Before to go

I need to invent other colors

It’s like if I was afraid

To find me elsewhere

To forgot you an entire year

A year to forgot you

Even folly’s losing his reason

But I want to make it up

Tumble, Tumble...

To find myself in the blend

Dixie
Parole & musique: S.Fiori

Dixie

Tell me what’s your song

That comes back to my ears all the time

You know, I don’t have so much time as before

No more time as I had

To fill my ears

Tell me what’s your song

That comes back as a sun all the time

When he comes, it’s never for a long time, nananan

For a long time from time to time

To warm up my ears

Hey, you, do the same

Take off your fingers from inside your ears

Hey, you, do the same

Depuis l'automne
Parole & musique: M.Normandeau et S.Fiori

Une chanson pour ici
Pour nous dire qu'on a refroidi
Une chanson en souvenir
Du temps qu'on voulait détruire
Un accord qui nous donne
Ce qu'on attend de l'automne
Quand y'a p'us rien à personne

Une chanson juste pour toé
Juste pour te dire grouille-toé
Une chanson pour m'hair
Parce que j'ai pus rien à dire
Rien à dire cet automne
Quand y'serait temps qu'on frissonne
Parce qu'y'a pus rien à personne

On voulait chanter dans la rue
Pour être moins perdus
Pis c'est la rue qu'on a perdue

Une chanson par ici
On n'a d'besoin ces temps-ci
Une chanson à retenir
Comme on retient nos désirs
Va falloir qu'à soit bonne
Si on veut passer l'automne

Eh! Calvaire on va s'enterrer

Since the Fall

A song for here

A song to say to us that we have grow cold

A song as a souvenir

Of the time we wanted to kill

A chord that gives us

What we’re expecting from the fall

When there’s nothing left to nobody

A song just for you

Only to say to you: Hurry up

A song to hate myself

Because I’ve anything else to say

Anything else to say to the fall

When it would be time to quiver

Because there’s nothing left to nobody

We wanted to sing in the street

To be less lost

But it’s the street that we lost

A song around here

We need one these days

A song to remember

Like we hold our desires

The song shall be good

If we want to cross the fall

Without anybody misses something

A song from a party

That isn’t no more a part of here

A song to leave

Far away from the big wax museum

I’m sorry to break your fun

But I’m looking for an autumn rime

That rimes to nothing neither anybody

Sine I know my land is to me

The other’s living death

Hey calvary, we will bury us

If it’s a dream, then, wake me up

It will be all, it will not be long

Stay here, because it’s coming

En pleine face
Parole & musique: S.Fiori

Face Forward

Another turned corner

It’s unfortunate for this day

Melt your ice or then,  move

Melt your ice

It’s me who has fallen face forward

What do I have to do?

Nothing to give to myself

No more sounds to give

Melt your ice or then,  move

Melt your ice

It’s me who has fallen face forward

What do I have to do?

Like an old lady that has lost her charm

I come to you, I come to you

Like an old lady that has lost her charm

I come to you, come to you, come to you

Give a sign

From where you are

I’m not hearing you anymore

Where are you, I can’t bear it

I’m not hearing you anymore

Where are you?

Where are you, I can’t bear it

I’m not hearing you anymore

Where are you?

Wow! Thanks, guitar_ode!! Clap  It's all so clear now...

I know very little French and it was still very hard for me to understand the lyrics.

Good work Josiane. Clap

I was thinking of doing that the other day but my lazyness won... Embarrassed

Some of this is pretty hard to translate and doesn't really mean something in english but anyway, it's a pretty good job.

If you want to understand the concept, click the link I posted earlier.

Bravo! Tongue

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

Ah, the link is really interesting! I didn't know all of that. It gives a great explanation of the concept!

Thanks for the translation, but I can't find a lot of resemblance between Bern's link and the translation... I guess that the guy who wrote the review at the link has some extra information, because most of the stuff he wrote can't be understood from the lyrics.

Yeah, I think so too. The link is really more explicit than the lyrics. There are two possible interpretations:

- The guy knew a member or a close relation of someone in the band, or he got the privilege to learn about the album by someone that was well-informed

- The guy just gave by his own a sense to the lyrics that is not really verifiable and maybe not authentic.

Maybe the concept IS what he explains. This concept could have been the idea that germinated in the mind of the band members, but they didn't wanted to put all cards on table. So, the results we can see of all that is the existing album which is not explicit...

Anyway, we can certainly affirm that that this awesome album is based on the change of seasonsBig%20smile

Absolutely The 5th, but "Dixie" is one of the most well rounded, cohesive and excellent tracks of all times.

I wonder if y'all were Quebecois, or Canadien, whether Harmonium's first might overwhelm you ? The next two studio efforts were well received, but checking people's collections over the years leads me to believe that the first was best loved. Of course, the language barrier might make the difference, plus the fact that the first one was more acoustic guitar & folk oriented.

I love the first Harmonium record a lot. It is indeed the most popular here in Québec. It's basically poppier so it appeals to most people. Almost all songs on it were major hits in Québec in the seventies. On top of that, the closing section of Un Musicien Parmis tant d'autres is almost seen as the second Québécois anthem.

As much as I like their debut, the only thing that saddens me is that their two others don't get nearly as much attention. Ironically, when you ask someone who lived in the seventies what is the best Harmonium album, he almost always answers L'Heptade. L'Heptade is often seen as Fiori's masterpiece here but it doesn't get played. I guess most people like the simpler folk rock songs from the debut.

Anyways, I hope that answers your question.

RIP in bossa nova heaven.
