Fair enough, Sean, thanks. Yes, anything after Pieces does indeed Stynk. I just get more defensive about them than many other bands in the archives cuz I honestly think they qualify as prog (and if Pavlov's Dog and Traffic are here, Styx certainly deserves a place). They're one of the most beaten-n-bruised bands on this great site. Not a Top 10 band for me even, but I do feel like one of the few on this site that will defend their honor, so I do.

I could list 30 or 40 Styx songs that easily qualify as prog, much of it killer too. Sure, they had a very melodic, commercial leaning, but that was mostly on the late '70s/early '80s material. I proudly stand up for Styx, cuz there's more to them than Kilroy Was Here and the even worse Cornerstone. I used to dislike Styx too, until I gave Equinox, The Serpent Is Rising and Crystal Ball a good listen. there's more to Styx than FM Radio rock. Like what you don't hear on FM radio, for one...

worst bands: Pavlov's Dog (is this prog? is this vocalist for real?), Doctor Nerve (totally annoying!), Starcastle (Yes copycats)...and speaking of Yes,I would NEVER call them BAD, but I cannot, no matter how many times and albums I've tried, get into YES. (here come the insults...) It's Anderson's vocals I can't get into, way to "twee". Musically they are beyond good, but it's just those damn vocals...not for me (that's why I dislike Starcastle too...) (Yes, I already tried 'Drama', recommended by a friend who knows I don't like Jon Anderson...and the guy sounds just like Jon Anderson!)

Isn't there a "Dark Side of the Spoon" album? By Ministry, wasn't it?

ELP is my most disliked, Carl Palmer excluded. They are grossly overrated. Always over-the-top, and self important, EVEN FOR PROGGERS. Their 'landmark' and 'revolutionary' prog work of 1973 has not stood up well over time. Listen to their work now and prepared to be completely underwhelmed. All style, no substance. Too many covers and 'arrangements' of other people's works, way too much 'noodling' on the keys by Emerson (the Steve Vai of Keyboards). Karn Evil my a$$. A great indication of how being faster, does not always translate into being better. Give me Banks, Wright or Eddy Harsch any day.

Spock's Beard and Glass Hammer - all the elements that I like are in there, but somehow it just doesn't add up for me.

Among the big groups : I would point out Tales Topographic Oceans , A passion Play, Brain Salad Surgery are all over-rated but not downright bad. I think that that later ELP works are much Wor(k)se. Love Bitch of course ranks with the best of the hatable.  Tull made Under Wraps but is it Prog? And Yes's 96 Close Your Ears is also tops as is Invisible touch but again is it prog?

Oh, and I'm with Trotsky on not really digging Prog Metal. PoS excluded, obviously.

I'm...  really not sure.  I've heard some prog that didn't catch my eye (ear?), but I usually just traded it back in or something, never really dwelled on it or thought about it.  I guess I could just go with Enchant, it seems no matter how many different albums by them I try, I can never find one that seems like more than a conscious attempt to write in odd time without having good riffs.

Styx - 20th Century Masters--The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Styx CD album cover

and any other of those millenium collection albums.  I like about 10 Styx songs a lot, 3 of those songs I like are on that album the rest was the worst of Styx not the best of
