as much as I like Yes... I'd have to agree with that... the worse sin a piece of music can be... dull and uninspired.... reminded me of the DT I listened to yesterday.... Edited by micky - March 20 2007 at 03:18 |

why must the yes disciples among us always capitolize their votes! i love awake, but cmon...it's not some radioactive japanese monster come to stamp out the competition... its more like two anorexic victorian women sitting down to cucumber sandwiches and pontificating on the vagaries of gold leafing their ceilings...
and, why hasn't anyone mentioned the unsurpassable CLIMAX that is THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENTAL SECTION OF CINEMA SHOW which continuously builds and molds like an ever shifting sea coming finally to one of the most serene/powerful/romantic/soaring into mist over a valley moments in any genre? interestingly enough, i always thought the 'master of images' section in Awaken reeked of Tony Banks' styled chord phrasings... maybe its just me, there's something about the triumphant tension ambiguity.. wish I knew more theory so I could just come out and name the chords... |

I think Awaken is the best Yes track ever recorded. The pinnacle of their career. The track is very inventive, worked out with a lot of attention to detail. The sound is great, the production is amazing. They did very original things on that song, like the whole band cooperating on the percussion. They were being very creative, like the idea that the organ parts should be sent to the studio through a telephone line. And: the music is really happening. They were really working on a masterpiece, you can tell. This is the very best thing they ever did in their career. As musicians they have ripened a lot since Close To The Edge. In terms of composition (building a major scale epic), and production, they were so much better in 1977 than they were in 1972.
I love Cinema Show as well, and it's also one of Genesis' highlights, but not the absolute highlight: that is Firth Of Fifth to me. But even Firth Of Fifth wouldn't be of the same calibre as Awaken.
So I voted Awaken. Edited by Moogtron III - March 20 2007 at 04:08 |

Well, it's hard one. But I vote for Awaken this time. As my predecessor said, if it'd be Firth of Fifth or The Musical Box, it'd be another story. In fact, I love Awaken and remember I heard it for the first time - that "Master" section was unforgettable experience for me.
Although Cinema Show is great... |

yes, mostly because genesis has been kind of predictable throughout their career, and i love the blatantly obvious classical and folk influences in yes' music.

In my mind, It'd be more likely to compare Cinema Show and And You and I, similar feel. Although, And You and I would destroy Cinema Show.
But I promoted Genesis in this poll, I like the song better. |

Horrid... I can't decide. I love both those songs so much.
I voted for Cinema Show in the end, but only because i hate not voting in polls =(

This is actually a very interesting poll. Two mastodonts with not probably their best songs competiting. I've been watching this and checking out which one has the leed, and it seems to change once in a while. But it seems Genesis is taking the lead now. It's understandable, Genesis was always the easier to adapt to band of these two, even though yes songs are all based on very simple pop tunes to begin with.
