Who's Next is also a progressive masterpiece. |
The Who are one of my favorite bands and Who's Next is by large their best album, tracks as Baba O'Rilley, Won't Get Fooled Again, Behind Blue Eyes and Going Mobile are absolute masterpieces.
But the album is pure, pristine, fabulous, exciting and awesome ROCK & ROLL, there's no progressive rock relation maybe except for the keyboard intro in Won't Get Fooled Again.
Why should we take it from their real context where it's an icon of Rock to be just an average Prog' Rock album?

Also, I think Blue Oyster Cult, though always firmly in the proto-metal area, were progressive without being "Prog"...plenty of adventurous directions were taken over the course of their '70s and early '80s albums, really interesting band for those into hardrock/proto-metal with subversive lyrical concepts and an overall unique approach. Songs like "Astronomy", "Flaming Telepaths", much of the 'Imaginos' album, "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars", "Unknown Tongue" ...those and more would definitely appeal to some prog fans. |
Good call... I love Blue Oyster Cult... one of my favorite bands of all time!

YAY! Led Zeppelin!
Would it not be best to add all the albums? That's the way it is now for bands like Genesis, who've turned to the Dark Side. Even "We Can't Dance" is on the archives.

Quadrophenia and Tommy are the real Progressive records! Why Who still is nin at the Archives????
Elton John: above mentioned albums I also need to vote for Elton John (1970), Tumbleweed Connection (1971), Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), A Single Man (1978).
David Bowie: any of his 1976-1979 albums!
Beatles: from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road (1965-1969).
Rolling Stones: Their Satanic Majestie's Request (1967) and Gimme Shelter (1969).
Doors: the couple of two debut albums + LA Woman (1971).
Queen: they also must be in Progarchives! their 5 earlies albums plus INNUENDO are Progressive Rock!
Deep Purple: The Book Of The Tallesyn (1968), April (1969), Concerto For A Group And Orchestra (1970) and Fireball (1971).
Uriah Heep: the earliest 5 albums.

Kate Bush IS prog IMO..
Roxy Music, more glam rock with the benefit of Brian Eno having been with them for a while. I like em but they are NOT prog.
I regard many electronic music artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plaid, Boards of Canada and FSOL as progressive music. There have been many collaborations with progressive musicians in the field of ambient electronica, notably Fripps work with The Orb (FFWD project) and Steve Hillage's System 7.

I still think there were Prog Band, at least till the 1975th year (1973-1974 exactly!). Plus their great VIVA! ROXY MUSIC (1976) live album - the Proggest and the best (IMO) thing Roxy Music ever done.

Rock bands need to justify progressive elements, but progressive groups can be heavy rock easily. Something's not right here. Look at ELP who typify progressive but are as heavy as the best of them - listen to 'Living Sin' on Trilogy.
