The light show during "The Wild, Wild Sea" was amazing! That was such a great show.

He also played with Steve Lukather on the Los Lobotomys album and took great fun, apparently : http://www.stevelukather.net/Album.aspx?id=1

I saw the band in Paris in 1994 but I don't know if he was the drummer on this tour (Steve Lukather's Candyman tour). One of the best gigs of my life, by the way ...

crap... I didn't see Mike's question... thanks James... that is exactly what I meant. It has nothing to do with the music.. but as we know...  it isn't always about the music.

Sting is not progressive, but he is mixing different musical styles, like prog, and he's creating great atmospheres. His lyrics are often good too. So... if you're one of the Sting - dislikers: could you tell me why?

Raff and I just talked about that.... think it might be more personal than music.  The 'preachy' types tend to rub people wrong.  Bono is another one who tends to be the same way...

for me... the mighty Zenyatta Mondatta for Police album

for solo album...again... Dream of the Blue Turtles.. a fabulous album

between the two.. going for Zenyatta Mondatta to get it on the board hahah

Okay, that explains something! I didn't see Sting a long time in the press for anything other than the music, but Bono I see regularly. So I didn't think of that.

Haven't heard Labyrinth myself. As for the other albums: I get your point too. I just experience it differently.

Sidenote: I actually met Sting during The Soul Cages tour here in Kansas City. We caught wind that he was with his band (and opener Concrete Blonde) down at this restaurant in the city. Luckily the people who called us from the restaurant had a table right next to theirs. The person with whom I really wanted to meet, however, was drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. He was devouring a platter of raw oysters, so as nervous as I was, I tapped him on the shoulder and told him that I really wanted to shake his hand and that I have more discs with him on it than Sting. He stopped what he was doing, stood up, shook my hand and said, "Thank you. You have no idea how much that means to me."

We didn't say anything to Sting until the later part of the night as he got up and walked right by us. We shook his hand and complimented him on a great show (and it was) and he was very gracious. I think guys like him appreciate not being smothered and approaching them with respect. He was nothing but friendly to us.

I don't think that is really reflected in the music though.

Okay, I can see now why some people are put off by Sting. I have the same feeling with Bono, just not with Sting.

His solo stuff is very slick and polished but I can just about tolerate it. Been a few years since I heard The Police's albums, but I remember really liking 'Regatta De Blanc'. Most of their albums are good though that I recall.

I would say that the best solo Sting is Nothing Like The Sun. Also, The Soul Cages is pretty good, too. I have them all except for that latest of his. He really wussed out, and I only hope that his reunion with The Police lights a fire in him.

"Preachy" is certainly not a word that I'd associate with Sting ... which songs do you have in mind?

sh*t! I meant to vote for Reggata de Blanc but did Outlandos!  Next person that votes who wanted Outlandos could you please vote Reggata????

Reggata was friggin awesome.  Great guitar, bass and drums.  Great songs, great everything before the work become tiring.  I mean I like Ghost in the Machine, Zenyatta, and Synchronicity, but they just aren't nearly as well written.  Synchronicity's best song wasn't even on the album originally (Murder by Numbers).

Sting's solo albums are ok, but they begin to run together.  Although the Songs from the Labrynth was pretty good I though, but he didn't write those songs, and he barely played lute on it as it was sort of advertised that he did it all.
