Topic: Psychedelia ends and progressive begins Posted: February 15 2005 at 10:33 |
Can anyone define where psychedelia ends and progressive begins. This is quite difficult with Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Nice, Man, the Beatles and Ten Years After.

I don't think it is a matter of one ending and the other begining. They were more parallel with prog staring about 1969. The former lasted in to the 70's proabably about 1973 in it's original form.

I don't think the line can be drawn so distinctly... there's always been some kind of overlap, and even when Pink Floyd was in what was considered to be their full-blown progressive phase in the mid 70s, they were making psychedelic music.

There's definitely an overlap; If we accept the Byrds' "8 Miles High" as the first widely known psychedelic song - or at least a good template for psychedelia, we hear a mix of folk, riff-based rock and slightly avante-garde improvisation, which is, to me, the core of psychedelia. This sound was typified by the Great Society (later Jefferson Airplane) and the Grateful Dead at each end of the spectrum, and too many others to mention, although the influence of Bob Dylan at this time cannot be underestimated.
Pink Floyd's style went further, and built on the two areas, developing an imaginary, quirky English folk song style as well as a "cosmic space jam" style in the landmark "Piper...". They also seemed to take a leaf out of the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds", using a wide variety of instruments and playing techniques.
This was a very creative time, and all kinds of bands released all manner of material which all proved to be influential in one way or another;
The Moody Blues, Love, the Velvet Underground, the Soft Machine and the Doors all provided focus on different aspects of psychedelic and what was to be progressive music, with the Beatles pretty much centre stage on this side of the Atlantic, and the Beach Boys on the other - and the Bluesmen were creating some progressive stuff too; John Mayall's "Bare Wires" breaks the blues mould and sits in experimental territory, Spooky Tooth's "Spooky Two" has that massive Hammond sound, later to be heard on early Yes albums, the Small Faces released the semi-concept "Ogden's Nut Gone" and even the Rolling Stones tried to get in on the progressive act with "Their Satanic Majesties' Request" - although that's more experimental and tongue-in-cheek than truly progressive.
And then there was a certain Mr Emerson, who wasn't having a huge amount of luck with his band The Nice... probably because he kept stabbing his keyboards. But he did bring a certain amount of flashiness and classical inspiration to the mix.
None were quite as progressive as Zappa, however, although "Freak Out" is not exactly what we might call prog rock. His involvement in the Monkees' film "Head" certainly seemed to help create one of the most amazing psychedelic multimedia experiences of the late 1960s - much better than "Yellow Submarine" or any of the other somewhat sanitised Beatle's films.
All of this seemed to indicate that "ITCOTCK" was just bound to happen sooner or later, although quite how it influenced "Trespass" is giving me a headache or two...
I've probably missed quite a lot in this sketch, but thankfully there are those human databases of music; Dick Heath and DallasBryan to fill in the gaps

If i'm on the right lines as to what your getting at:
Do you mean the difference between say:Raw materials debut album to there 'Time is' album
Or say Pink floyd's ''Pipers @ the gates''/''Saucerful of secrets'' compared to there quite later ''Ummagumma''/ ''Atom heart mother'' albums

Nothing in this world vanishes and evolves at a determined point, The Cromagnon didn't vanished one day and appeared the Homo Sapiens, they coexisted for some time and the strongest survived.
In music is the same specially in thecase of Psychedelia and Prog, because Psychedelia is the starting point of Progressive Rock and it's most direct influence and ancester
In this case Psyche and Prog' not only coexisted, some bands like Strawbs, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues etc, blended the two styles to create a special fusion.

[QUOTE=Big Ears]Can anyone define where psychedelia ends and progressive begins.
-I think 1968 was the year when the "pure" Prog has started - there almost no Psychedely at Procol Harum's SHINE ON BRIGHTLY and VDGG's AEROSOL GREY MACHINE. Pink Floyd's A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS is very Progressive too...

My idea of progadelic records would be the Collectors, the Nice's debut and Caravan's debut. Also the Mopdies 's In Search of the Lost Chord.
If the blues had a baby and called it Rock'N Roll, then Psychadelic Rock had a baby and named it Progressive Rock

I doesn't look like you need me. Nice touch mentioning of Spooky Tooth. I might have included Jefferson Airplane - remember by the end of the 60's in the UK, the two big West Coast Bands were the Doors and Jefferson Airplane.
