Hows about we add the psych giants themselves, Status Quo? I think they are a perfect band for the proto-prog guidelines, myself.

Ah but pop is quite an integral part of proto-prog, is it not?
I believe The Beatles released a pop song or more in their career...

I can't remember which one, but one of their early 1970's albums nearly qualifies...
Apart from that, the 1960s albums are archetypal psychedelic rock - very similar to the Small Faces in many ways.
While the SF's could stretch it to a point with their semi-concept album "Ogden's Nut Gone", there's nothing really out of the ordinary in the Quo's music of that time.
From about 1973 onwards, their direction is obvious and non-progressive.
Great band though - and, if I could remember the name of the album, there's definitely some surprises in their back catalogue for everyone that thinks they only knew 3 chords.
Not even vaguely Prog-Related really.

No,but...I would partially agree to the inclusion. 25%
They made some proggy blues stuff from about 1970-1973 but thereafter,no way!
The albums; Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon,Dog of Two Head,Piledriver,Hello and Quo all have their (prog-ish) moments.
The reason that I wouldn't include them is because it would open up inclusion of similar artsists.

No, not for me. Their psych material is hardly proto prog, it's bubblegum/pop psych really, imho. 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men', 'Ice In The Sun', 'Technicolor Dreams' and the like have a sort of kitsch appeal now but it is far removed from prog.
Their early 70s work is as close as they got, and then only VERY fleetingly, such as the fiddly guitar intros to 'Big Fat Mama' or 'Backwater', but even then I'd be genuinely stunned if they were ever added here. I speak as a fan of their early to mid 70s albums too, which are genuine heavy rock classics, imo.

I'm not sure about Piledriver, but either Hello or Quo (can't remember which offhand) do meander vaguely into proggy territory - I didn't believe it myself until I heard them.
Not enough to be Prog-Related though

Status Quo? Is that a band ridiculed all over the world because of their C-F-G-chord knowledge? Is the the band often cited as an opposition to prog?
But then again...why are they so often included on different "best of progressive rock" compilations?

I was a big Quo fan for years in my yoof 
I saw them live 6 or 7 times and always had a great time - the boys achieved a hell of a lot and are still going strong, they are a national institution, but i'm sure even Rossi and Parfitt themselves would fall about laughing if anyone suggested they were Prog!! 
and my Mum likes them..

Quo get unfairly knocked for 'playing the same three chords' when this patently isn't the case for their earlier work. 'Piledriver', 'Hello', 'Quo', 'On The Level', 'Blue For You' and 'Live' are just brilliant heavy rock albums with a far greater variety than they are given credit for. I must say though, after those albums I don't really like too much- the sound got slicker thereafter culminating in travesites like 'Burning Bridges'...
